Most Top Seed Pairings in 2008 Presidential Election Are Too Close to Call
Obama versus Thompson produces only clear-cut lead, with Obama ahead

by Lydia Saad

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- A recent Gallup Poll assessed the 2008 general election with various pairings of the top two candidates for each party. If, as the question reads "the election were being held today," a race that includes the top-ranked Republican, Rudy Giuliani, would be highly competitive, regardless of whether his opponent is the top-ranked Democrat Hillary Clinton or second-place Democrat Barack Obama. Fred Thompson, newly emergent as Republicans' second choice for the nomination, also makes for a close contest with Clinton, but trails by a significant margin when matched against Obama.

The survey was conducted July 12-15, 2007. In both trial heats with Giuliani named as the Republican nominee, Giuliani receives 49% of the vote of registered voters nationwide. Running against Giuliani, Clinton receives 46% of the vote while Obama receives 45%. While Giuliani enjoys a slight lead in both cases, it is within the margin of sampling error for the survey, and thus not statistically significant.

<SNIP>

With Fred Thompson headlining the Republican ticket, it appears Clinton would have a slight, but not significant lead, 48% vs. 45%, while Obama would lead by a comfortable 51% vs. 40% margin.

3. We need to nominate the person with most upside. As the Guilani poll shows, Dems are not guaranteed
anything. We cannot take 2008 for granted because the GE is gonna be much closer than some people think. I think Obama has the best new ideas and has the most upside.

11. You're just a Hillary HATER!
:-)

Psst - in the unlikely event anyone cares what I think, I don't hate her.

In fact I like her, somewhat. She's just not all that. And not all that much of a Democrat, either.

13. This doesn't matter, because Thompson won't run...
And Gore trounces all Republican candidates by wide margins in every poll.

Are you serious? The only questions are when he gets in and whether he wins the nomination.
