Ladies And Gentlemen: Soak It All In. This Is History. |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 09:15 PM by MannyGoldstein
Today's evisceration of Gonzales was an amazing event. Those Senators weren't just frustrated and disgusted... they were REALLY, REALLY ANGRY. Even the Republicans, save for the insane Hatch, were frothing. (Well, Hatch was frothing too - but it was just rabies.)
I was fortunate enough to watch the downfall of Nixon as a youngster. I remember how Congress's concern turned to anger - and then impeachment. The anger began once the Saturday Night Massacre took place. For Congress, a President breaking the law is something to be concerned about - but a President mooning Congress - that's when the velvet gloves are replaced by brass knuckles.
It took almost a year between The Saturday Night Massacre and Nixon's resignation. I think that Bush will be gone faster, for two reasons.
First off, no investigation is needed to uncover many of Bush's crimes - they are out in the open. The man has taken the novel approach of simply declaring that his crimes are legal, and having Gonzales write a memo confirming that. If Bush thinks that the Constitution is just a "damned piece of paper", just wait until he sees what Congress thinks of those phony-baloney memos.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, an election is coming up in less than 16 months. The Republicans are hemorrhaging - their poll numbers and fundraising are dismal. If they don't move quickly to remove from their neck that stinking albatross carcass that is George W. Bush, next year's election will be the political equivalent of Cheney's "hunting" of birds tethered to the ground. If they want to survive as a relevant party, Bush has got to go - and fast.
So, ladies and gentlemen, soak this all in - it's history in the making. You'll be retelling this tale to future generations, and you don't want to miss a thing.

3. Feingold is up now (replay on C-SPAN 2). |
|
Magnificent. Schumer and Durbin were wonderful, too.
And yes, this also reminds me of the Watergate hearings, which I watched with fascination as the evidence against Nixon piled up. Let's hope the result here is the same.

asking if an American citizen were to be subjected to any of these tactics (torture) WOULD IT BE LEGAL? ACCEPTABLE?
Squirm like a worm Gonzo, you're going down, whether you choose to stay or not.
(Isn't there a smiley that eviscerates?) Oh I know... :eviscerate: :)

9. It was the GOP that brought Nixon down...Goldwater had the job of |
|
telling Nixon to resign or face impeachment, and almost certain conviction. Barry had his faults, but that was one of his better moments.
FWIW...before Goldwater died, he said, on several occasions, the the GOP had been hijacked, and he called the "new conservatives", "shitheads"....:D
It will be the GOP big players that kick bush into oblivion...there are forces we know little of that are at work behind the curtain. They may decide to let him play out the last 16 months, but bush has already been knocked down a few pegs...neutering is not far off...:)
