New York Sun: Cheney ‘Sees An Opening’ And Wants To Run For President

In April, the New York Sun published an editorial entitled “Cheney’s Chance,” encouraging the Vice President to jump into the presidential race. The Sun argued that having a “defender on the campaign trail” would boost Bush’s approval ratings.

In a review of Stephen Hayes’ new biography of Cheney, Ira Stoll — the editor of the Sun — recycles his plea. Stoll writes that he believes the Hayes book is part of an effort by Cheney to drum up support for a potential campaign run:

The book quotes Senator McCain as saying, “Dick doesn’t like campaigning.” Nothing in the Hayes book suggests that Mr. Cheney is about to do it — except for that the vice president spent nearly 30 hours cooperating with the author and apparently gave the okay for many of his friends and colleagues to grant similar access. The Richard Cheney described in this book isn’t vain enough to do that simply for his reputation in history. My own guess — okay, hope — is that Mr. Cheney has taken a look at the Republican presidential field and sees an opening. If Iowa and New Hampshire Republicans start receiving copies of “Cheney” in their mailboxes, Mr. Cheney’s popularity may yet begin to climb.

Stoll acknowledges that his previous editorial calling for Cheney to run was “was widely mocked.” Apparently, once wasn’t enough.

8. 19% of everybody
which puts him right in the mix of all other announced repug candidates. In fact 19% overall probably adds up to 50+% of repug primary voters

25. But almost everyone knows who Cheney is.
And the vast preponderance of those who know him have decided they'll never vote for him.

6. With all due respect, you may indeed be right. We cannot assume ANYTHING anymore,
can we? I had forgotten how far down the rabbit hole we've fallen.

I appreciate the reality check, I do.

17. Those were my first thoughts, too.
A guy with low approval ratings that hates campaigning may be in the process of creating an "opening" that is an acual closing of the 2008 election.

5. Mr. 13% is gonna run for president?
I don't think he's that stupid. He's got a great gig now, and he can steal enough money before he leaves office to keep 3 or 4 generations of Vaders in luxury. Besides he has a made to order scapegoat now, somebody that's too fuckin stoopid to know how much he's being used. He's got the entire DC press corp scared shitless of him (tho that wouldn't change).

From his standpoint, looking at the pubs field of "pygmies" I can see why the dick might think he could do better than any of them. But he's got everything to lose and nothing to gain.

9. Please, let it be so
If Cheney were to get the Republican nomination, then the victory of a ticket of Gravel/Kucinich, or vice-versa, is not a "maybe", but a "definitely."

31. Careful using "shot" when referring to Dick Cheney
Whether he's taking a shot at hunting pals, or taking a shot (you know what I mean) before going hunting, the man's reputation is - well - shot.

Cheney isn't an election kinda guy. More like a let's-open-the-camps-for-DUers type, I would say. Would love to see Deadeye Dick throw his trident into the ring, though.

27. Makes perfect sense
This actually makes sense from the "they will never relinquish power" school of thought. Cheney knows if a dem gets to be pres he is royally screwed and either moving to Dubai or club Fed forever. So first Shrub resigns early next year and voila! Darth Cheney becomes emperor and decides he will run for president. He uses all of Karl Rove's evil machinations, and the Supreme Court to insure he stays president until his heart finally gives out. This is probably where they put him in the iron lung type whatsit? the Vader suit? and he becomes president for life.

Now try and seperate the ridiculous from the plausible in my statement above. It's pretty hard to do in the present time.

29. Spidery Sam couldn't run.
Never mind that he probably wouldn't survive a full term due to health problems; that Grand Cyclops bastard HATES the public eye. He feels the rest of powerless America is on a "need to know" basis with him. He's a boardroom, behind-the-scenes executive, where most of the work (that is, chicanery) gets accomplished. There's times where we don't see him for a few months.

I could never see Cheney doing campaign stops, speeches, photo-ops, press conferences, etc. because that simply isn't his style. And you think the Failure Fuhrer is hated? I seriously don't even think Diebold wouldn't be able to cheat this guy to victory; not with a consistent sub-20% approval rating, anyway.

'N.Y. Sun' Still Wants Cheney to Run for President

By E&P Staff

Published: July 24, 2007

NEW YORK Ira Stoll admits that his paper's pushing for Vice President Cheney to run for president several months ago was widely mocked. And he admits that a Washington Post pollster has pointed out that with a favorable rating of only 18%, Cheney is less popular than Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson -- after their trials. Yet he is standing by his man, and re-iterates today in the New York Sun that he hopes the Veep takes a look at the current GOP field and throws his hat in the ring.

Stoll, managing editor at the New York daily, uses a review of the new Stephen Hayes biography of Cheney to make this plea, claiming that the positive virtues revealed in the book proves his case.

"The book quotes Senator McCain as saying, 'Dick doesn't like campaigning.' Nothing in the Hayes book suggests that Mr. Cheney is about to do it — except for that the vice president spent nearly 30 hours cooperating with the author and apparently gave the okay for many of his friends and colleagues to grant similar access," Stoll observes. "The Richard Cheney described in this book isn't vain enough to do that simply for his reputation in history. My own guess — okay, hope — is that Mr. Cheney has taken a look at the Republican presidential field and sees an opening. If Iowa and New Hampshire Republicans start receiving copies of 'Cheney' in their mailboxes, Mr. Cheney's popularity may yet begin to climb."

Yet Stoll had opened his review by admitting it was an uphill fight:

"Of all the editorials The New York Sun has run, the one that attracted the most response was the one under the headline 'Cheney's Chance.' The editorial, suggesting that Vice President Cheney would be an attractive presidential candidate who would bring a lot to the race, caused a furor in the blogosphere and led to the production of an entire segment on CNN. It also led to several dinner party conversations of friends or relatives of the editorial writer devoted to whether the writer had finally lost his mind.

"Well, finally there is a response to those who suggest that affection for Mr. Cheney is a sign of clinical insanity, or, at least, a response more printable than the one Mr. Cheney himself gave to Senator Leahy. It comes courtesy of Stephen Hayes...."

The April 4 editorial asking Cheney to join the race stated, among other things, that "for those of us who are concerned with extending Mr. Bush's campaign for freedom around the world and cutting taxes at home, a Cheney campaign is attractive."
