ATLANTA (AP) - Republican Paul Broun was ready to be sworn in as
the newest member of Congress after his opponent declined a recount,
despite the narrow, 394-vote difference between them.
Former state Sen. Jim Whitehead was entitled to a recount but he said
Tuesday he had decided against it because the process could take up
to a week.
“The people of this district have been without a federal representative
since February, and that's long enough,” Whitehead said in a statement.
“For the good of the people of this district I will let the results stand
and allow us to regain our vote in the House immediately.”
The race was to succeed Rep. Charlie Norwood, who died in February
after a battle with cancer and lung disease. The tough-talking
conservative had been in his seventh term representing the 10th
congressional district in northeast Georgia.
