House Votes to ban permanent bases in Iraq. Good news!
Today, the House passed H.R. 2929, Banning Permanent U.S. Bases in Iraq. This bill states that it is the policy of the United States not to establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing a permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq. It also states that it is the policy of the United States not to exercise U.S. control of the oil resources of Iraq. The measure bars the use of any funds provided by any law from being used to carry out any policy that contradicts these statements of policy.

1. And of course Bush will veto it if it ever gets through the Senate

2. Sorry, it means nothing. Not to be a downer.
I served aboard a 25 year old "non-permananent base."

In fact, in some ways we like them better--cheaper operating costs, fewer long term lease hassles, easier to pick up and run. Prefab buildings, that wear better and require less maintenance than the stick and brick things. AND an excuse to use them.

3. Nobody here wants good news about Dems....they would rather bitch
about all the things they are not doing.

It's getting tiresome. I posted some good news. It dropped like a rock.

4. I agree that this is very good news

I would like to see how the White House does respond if the bill makes it to the President's desk; seeing that officially the Administration claims that permanent bases are not on their agenda.

Recommended!

5. And the bases that are already there?
And the largest embassy in the world?

Those are still there.

This bill was pointless.

6. That is exactly the point. Bush built them without congressional approval.
They even deny their existence and their plans.
