In the "hedge fund & private equity" category, the winner to date is Republican Mitt Romney (co-founder of a private equity firm) with $797,325 in contributions.

#2 is a Democrat. Hillary? Nope! Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is second with $726,950. Oh, yeah, he's chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. Hillary's third with $703,600 - only $63,000 more than Obama who has collected $640,000.

How about the "securities and investment" industry? Hillary got $3.3 million, Obama $3.1 million.

In contributions from "health professionals," Hillary is out front with $998,851, Obama $701,993.

In money from "pharmaceuticals/health products, Hillary has $172,150 and Obama has $160,572.

Don't weep for Edwards. The North Carolina trial lawyer is remembered well by colleagues. He leads all candidates with $6.5 million from "lawyers/law firms," the biggest single giving group.

Hillary, also a lawyer, is second with $6.2 million. Obama, also a lawyer, is third with $5.5 million.

1. In other words the top tier candidates are indeed corporate whores
Whose interests and legislation will be profoundly influenced by the donations they recieve. Nothing new here, that is an old, sad story.

And you wonder why people are going Green, third party, or dropping out altogether in such large numbers. It is because those candidates who are truly for people are being drowned out by those who are taking corporate lucre.

Just another reason why publicly funded elections are desperately needed in this country.
