Your context was unclear and I was confused until I thought about it for a minute. You're talking about what Hillary said during the YouTube debate.

Good points.

4. Pro drug-war?
Ick.

Might as well say "Pro-Stupidity."

I don't tend to think "progressive" is any worse a word to use than "liberal." I consider myself both. I believe in progress; socially, technologically, and politically. That makes me progressive. And we all know the definition of "liberal."

9. you don't sound like a progressive ...
you sound more like what one might call a "modern progressive."

Modern progressives are characterized by their hawkish, corporatist orientation on most issues. You might think of the term "modern" in this context to mean "not."

Gravel would be great. Biden and Hilldog will be good. Ghouliani will be a little bit better.
Are you really a Gravel supporter? If so, do you really think Biden would be worse then Hillary?
I am from NYS, so it would be local political suicide to oppose Hillary (unless you support Obama, who will most likely be veep).

Again, peace. Peace and low stress to you.

43. mdmc
has been here for years; at least as long as I, if not longer. It's true that some of us don't "fit" the newer, bigger, more "modern progressive" DU as comfortably as we did in earlier years.

I interpreted the OP to be a characterization of the kind of "progressives" in the top tier of the primary race, and perhaps of their supporters.

17. I am not in favor of the drug war
but I don't think that one isn't a liberal solely because they support it. It should be noted that Prohibition was supported by many liberals. Many people have personal experience with drugs that have colored them. That doesn't make them not a liberal.

34. I am just getting ready for the inevitable
Right now I am supporting a non-drug war candidate - H. Dennis Kucinich.

But eventually, we will have to support a "pro-drug war progressive".

It is sad but true.

I don't support the drug war as much as I support the Democratic Party. I support the Democratic Party, not the drug war. The Democratic Party supports the drug war, not me.

Peace and low stress my friend.

30. Racism is not the main reason to oppose the drug war
Edited on Tue Jul-31-07 02:37 PM by MiserableFailure
But yes the drug war is racist. It's also classist. Very few If I bust someone for crack cocaine(high percentage of users are black AND poor), they're gonna get a much longer sentence on average than someone busted for powdered cocaine(high percentage of users are white AND rich).

So it's racist and classist, yes, but the main reason to oppose it is the fact that it's a victimless crime, just like prostitution. I used to drug bust at least once a week when I was on patrol, and I didn't like it. I hate that it's a part of a cop's job. I would prefer that cops would be able to spend all their time finding and helping prosecute people who are actually hurting people. Drugs are a health problem and not a criminal one. And legalizing them would put the gangbanging dealers out of business. It continues because prison guard unions are very strong, but a lot of cops don't like it. I'd say that a majority of the people I work with are in favor of at least marijuana legalization.

I used to watch the daily phony "war on drugs" game. I couldn't help thinking that most of those cops out rousting Toyotas looking for a rock or two didn't get into the "Protect and Serve" game for that...

Thanks for reinforcing my opinion... :hi:

35. The Iraq war was a disaster, but I was right to vote for it
because I wasn't really voting for it, and anyway I had to vote to authorize it because there might have been WMDs. I'm for civil rights except for people who use drugs and others who don't deserve them. Liberals are weak like Rush says, but I'm strong, which is why I'm a progressive. Progressives are pretty much like liberals if the voter is a liberal but nothing at all like liberals if the voter dislikes liberals.

And it will likely take decades to overturn. At least a Democratic President will push for medical marijuana and treatment over prison time. A Republican President will push for another round of mandatory minimums.
