HR180/Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act to go to House floor this Monday
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 04:00 PM by RestoreGore
I received this by mail and after contacting my representative am passing it on in the hopes that more people will see this, call this number, and urge their representatives to support HR 180, the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act. The horror of the genocide in Darfur continues to go on day by day as companies doing business with Khartoum continue to remain blind to their perpetuation of it. This bill would be a comprehensive step in stopping the support of genocide by American companies and protect states that divest from them. I would even go one step further and ask people to look at their own personal portfolios if they have one to see if any companies they have invested in are doing business in the Sudan and also divest from them as well. The power of the purse can be an effective weapon, and this at least is a start. So please pass this on, because it is a matter of life and death.

Support the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act

Dear Anti-Genocide Activist,

House Resolution 180, the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act, is expected to be considered on the House floor this Monday, July 30 after passing the Financial Services Committee.

If passed, DADA would be the most robust piece of legislation approved by Congress since genocide was declared in Darfur.

Call 1-800-GENOCIDE and urge your representative to take action:

Ask your representative to vote in favor of H.R. 180.

This bill would provide federal protection to states that divest from the worst offending companies fueling the genocide.

This bill would also prohibit U.S. government contracts with such companies and ensure American dollars are not funding the ongoing atrocities in Darfur.

Encourage your representative to vote in favor of DADA by calling 1-800-GENOCIDE (1-800-436-6243).

Together, we can ensure states are granted the federal protection they deserve for acting as responsible and moral market participants!

Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act

The passage of the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act would:

Create a federal list of the worst offending companies

Authorize states to divest

Prohibit U.S. government contracts with companies complicit in the genocide

Authorize states to also prohibit such contracts

This bill does not affect American companies and contains a provision that will take the legislation off the books once the genocide has ended.
