Edwards Announces Environmentalist Endorsements
Edwards Announces Environmentalist Endorsements
Environmental Leadership Committee to Advise Campaign on Environmental Issues, Help Spread the Message about Edwards’ Environmental Plan
John Edwards for President
Saturday, July 28, 2007

----
Epping, New Hampshire -- Today at a house party in Epping, John Edwards announced the endorsement of Environmentalists for Edwards, a group of environmental leaders from across New Hampshire who will help advise the campaign on environmental issues and help spread the message about John Edwards’ comprehensive plan to fight global warming and build a New Energy Economy.

The group will be chaired by Rep. Jay Phinizy and Rep. David Essex, the Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively of the House Environment and Agriculture Committee. The members of the committee are Joanne Allison Sparks, North Conway environmental activist; Maureen Westrick of Intervale and founder of the Fertile Valley Initiative; Margaret Ridgely , North Sandwich member of New Hampshire Audubon; Samuel Wasmuth, Wolfeboro member of Sierra Club; Jennifer Snow, Stratham environmental activist; Kay Delanoy, Keene environmental activist; Donna Thompson, Derry environmental activist; Joseph Cullum, Spofford environmental activist and Ron Poltak, Auburn environmental activist.

“John Edwards has been the leading voice in this race on environmental issues,” said Phinizy. “He has driven the environmental debate by being the first candidate to offer a comprehensive plan to fight global warming and the first major candidate to commit to running a carbon neutral campaign. John Edwards has innovative ideas about ending our dependence on foreign oil and creating a new energy economy that will help bring rural communities back to life and create new, good-paying jobs. I am proud to endorse him today and look forward to working to help elect him the next President of the United States.”

5. John Edwards will never convince me he is an environmentalist . NEVER!
In 1999 he voted for mountaintop removal. It didn't pass, but he voted for it.

In 2003, he told North Carolinians that he "would lead the way" against exploratory drilling off the North Carolina coast. Not only did he never bother to give a floor speech on the issue, but he DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP TO VOTE!

We all know about "the house". My gripe is that he clear-cut 50 acres of trees to build the durn thing. In Orange County (NC), the average citizen would not have been able to do this. There are strong tree-cutting ordinances there. You would have to do a lo of working "the insiders" to get permission to cut through all the red tape.

My feeling is that when you are an environmentalist and really love the land, you internalize it. You do not clear-cut 50 acres of trees during the peak season of bird-nesting; let alone, create destruction for so many animals and amphibians.

Don't the "environmentalists" of New Hampshire care about any of this? Or are we back to believing what someone "says" instead of what they actually do?

8. He didn't seriously vote for mountaintop removal.

He voted for a symbolic amendment that didn't pass. It was only symbolic and was not supposed to pass.

I am not from NC and could not refute your second point.

The third point is another attack on his house. Did he do the responsible thing and plant new trees elsewhere to make up for clearing land for his home?
