Newsday: Obama attack shows Clinton's less charming side
Obama attack shows Clinton's less charming side

BY GLENN THRUSH, newsday.com
July 29, 2007

WASHINGTON - For seven years Hillary Rodham Clinton has played against type, courting skeptics and sandpapering away her sharpest edges to counter perceptions that she was caustic, short-tempered and politically ruthless.

That charm offensive came to a screeching halt after last Monday's YouTube/CNN debate when she ridiculed Barack Obama's promise to meet with hostile foreign leaders unconditionally during his first year in office.

Her aides were declaring victory in last week's fight, but Clinton's attacks on the Illinois senator have some wondering if she's sacrificing long-term image-building for a few whacks at an opponent who's been getting under her skin.

"She threw some of that goodwill out the window by attacking Obama," said Andrew Polsky, a Hunter College political science professor.

"She has a very difficult road ahead of her," he added. "Her negatives are so high, 40 to 45 percent of the American people won't vote for her under any circumstance. Can she really afford to alienate anybody else? That's the real risk they are taking when she goes into attack mode."

5. When she said "what happened to the politics of hope?"
that really annoyed me. If she keeps this up, I'm not voting for her in the GE, assuming she gets that far.

14. Voting for the Democrat for President is Republican?
Go get more training, you're failing miserably with this set of talking points.

15. The idea that if I support Obama and Obama supports person X
I must also support person X is a Republican-way of thinking.

And yes, anymore voting for the Democratic president is voting Republican. I did it in 2004 with Kerry; I'll not do it again with Sen. Clinton.

9. Specifically - HRC's Self-righteousness has now surfaced.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/24/AR2007052402479_pf.html

"Bob Boorstin, who worked for Clinton when she was pushing her plan to restructure the nation's health-care system in the early days of her husband's presidency, blamed her for its collapse. "I find her to be among the most self-righteous people I've ever known in my life," he told Bernstein. "And it's her great flaw, it's what killed health care," along with other factors.

13. From the Rasmussen poll you cited.....
..."That question came up during last Monday’s Presidential Debate with Illinois Senator Barack Obama saying he would commit to such meetings and New York Senator Hillary Clinton offering a more cautious response. Democrats, by a 55% to 22% margin, agree with Obama. Clinton and Obama continue to dominate the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination".

12. Broadening the discussion
Hillary and Obama are not the only candidates in the race, but we are allowing the sensationalizing media to take over campaigns. The public needs a broader discussion before it can make up its mind. OK,we are all aware of Hillary's propensity for over-calculation and Mr. Obama's lack of being tested in foreign affairs. However there were other people on that stage who were given little chance to present their views. I would have liked to hear more of Governor Richardson's approach to this issue and a further expansion of his accomplishing a complete US withdrawal from Iraq. At least he has had direct experience dealing with unsavory leadership and maybe we could have learned something useful.

Instead we start the peeing contest trying to desperately to cover for potential favorite candidates. In fact we know very little how these present two front runners will govern. It is only by letting the other voices in the race have their say that perhaps we will get a little insight. I believe this is why we wind up with poor leadership in government. I have contributed to Mr. Richardson's campaign to keep him in the race, but I am still making up my mind.

16. HRC made a mistake by that encounter.
She was basically acknowledging Obama as an equal (re: point spread advantage).

Thanks, Hillary!
