Who will be the Repug sacrificial lamb for 2008?
Thompson is looking weaker by the day and may not even formally announce. McClame has imploded and is running out of cash. Rudy's going to have problems with The Base. Mitt's got some of the same problems that Rudy has, but on the plus side he has great hair! Duncan Hunter? Who? Brownback? Huckabee?

DU Prognosticators: Who's going to be the sacrificial lamb at the top of the GOP ticket, and why?

1. Mittens or Rudy. Still the best two (after McCain) that they've got.

5. I don't think he'll run, and if he does, won't get the nom.
Newt is so ... old news. With lotsa baggage. But we all know that ...

6. I would say Mittens and since he will have the GOP press behind hi, there is more than a good chance
that he will be the next Prez.

7. It depends on the faction they want to discredit
Let me explain. The DLC faction in our party wanted to discredit the liberals, so they ran Mondale in 1984 against the extremely popular Reagan. The GOP wanted to discredit the secularist Goldwater Republics in 1996 when they ran Dole. That put the final nail into the fiscal responsibility coffin in that particular party and paved the way for the coup in 2000.

They really, really expected to continue the dynasty by running Jebbie in 2008, something that has been derailed by the present squatter's incompetence. Jebbie will be held aside until 2012.

My guess is that they'll run a moderate this time, moderate being a relative term. That means Rudy Garland. They know they can't win without the fundy vote and they know that too many states have tightened up election law for another easy cheat. Four years of a corrupt press blaming the present administration's failures on a Democrat will bring the fundies back into the fold, especially when they run someone with fundy cred like Jebbie.

What we have to hope for is that millennial fever has run its course and that the fundy fad is on its way out. I see quite a few signs of that, from the popularity of atheist books to the existence of cheats like Christian porn sites. I do know that if the Democrat in office appeases the GOP in any way, the Democrat will be out of power so fast his/her head will spin, and we will have lost our country.

8. It's looking more and more like it'll be Newt Gingrich
For the very reasons you mention. Everyone else is imploding and old Newtie is acceptable (if not outright beloved) by "the base".

10. Rudy G if they want to attract moderates,
Fuhrer Romney is they want someone who looks the part of a President but doesn't know how to be one (the same can be said of all the GOP candidates though). If all else fails, they'll rally around Conservative extremist Newt Gingrich, he'll unify the base but piss off the moderates.

12. I think the Mittster will ultimately get the nom.
At least, that's what I think right now. Once the "religious right" (which is truly neither religious nor right) gets done with Rudy, he'll be sent packing.

And Mitt is SO beatable.

Bod Dole tried that once before, and Bob Dole learned Bob Dole's lesson.
