Chelsea Clinton: First Child Once Again?
NYT: First Child Once Again?
By JODI KANTOR
Published: July 31, 2007

(J. Scott Applewhite/Associated Press)
President Clinton, daughter Chelsea and the first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, walked with their Labrador to board Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in 1998.

Asked which parent Chelsea Clinton most resembles, friends tick through the mother-daughter similarities. There is the habit of pre-empting questions by asking lots of them. The passionate interest in health care. The tendency to sound a bit scripted when talking about policy, even in private. The way both borrowed on family contacts to establish post-White House careers, but won over skeptical colleagues with their diligence and enthusiasm.

And if her mother, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, manages to become the first female president of the United States, Chelsea Clinton could be in a historic, head-spinning position of her own: the first first child twice over.

She certainly brings experience to the job. At age 12, she appeared in Bill Clinton’s “Man From Hope” video, testifying to his fatherly virtues. (Mr. Clinton also told viewers of his daughter’s forgiving reaction to his admissions about marital transgressions.) During the Monica Lewinsky scandal six years later, she was photographed hand in hand with her parents, seemingly holding them together.

When Mrs. Clinton first ran for the Senate, her 20-year-old daughter crisscrossed New York State by her side. Now, at 27, Ms. Clinton is still clapping and beaming on her parents’ behalf, accompanying them on trips (recently, to Aspen, Colo., Germany and Israel), fund-raising (she helped bring in more than $20 million for her father’s foundation this fall) and playing a more glamorous version of her lifelong role: model daughter.

“It’s ‘The Truman Show,’ ” said Jill Kargman, a friend of Ms. Clinton, citing the movie about a character whose entire life is a reality television program.

But like Truman, who eventually breaks free, Ms. Clinton now has her own life: a hedge fund job, a serious boyfriend, a tight circle of friends and a permanent place setting on the New York party circuit....

2. She's done fine. How fricking much pressure is that?
She does have two loving and very smart and/or connected parents.

And, she should have the opportunity to not be in the spotlight, even arrested Bush kids get that break. MKJ

18. Oh puhleeze....not a presidential/House of Windsor intermarriage
Our president should not be the grandparent of an heir to the British throne. We had a revolution to get away from that kind of thing.

Leave aristocracy and nobility to the Brits(who, come to think of it, don't really want them themselves these days.)

Hillary has her head held high. Chelsea is looking straight ahead as if neutral and Bill's looking down and dejected.

7. Or Bill's looking at Buddy and thinking "Life would be

easier if I were a dog." Or "Well, at least Buddy's not mad at me." ;-)

But I've always thought it was like you said, that Bill was hanging his head in shame while Hillary kept her head high and Chelsea held them together. You know Hillary was ready to kill Bill for lying to her and letting her go on television and defend him. But only wingnuts cared. The rest of America said "It's a private matter, none of my business."

20. Well, anybody would if they'd just had to tell their wife what Bill had to own up to.
Not judging the guy, but admitting to that would make you feel like caca if you had any decency left inside.

There was no reason for Starr to drag all that shit out. The Clintons never did anything to him.

9. I read this article this morning,
and I couldn't help being astonished by the following, in reference to the period immediately following 9/11:

"For most yourn Americans I know, 'serving' in the broadest sense now seems like the only thing to do," she wrote. "Is banking what's important right now?"

In the 'broadest' sense, I suppose it is, since she's now with Avenue Capital Group. I'm somewhat amazed that such a smart woman would think along those lines.

10. The elder Clintons have both missed the ball from time to time
...but when it came to the most IMPORTANT job, they evidently hit it out of the park.
Bless 'em all.

through and through.

I'll give you that she didn't get in trouble, but I'll be damned if I will call her career choice that of an humanitarian role model. No, only if you desire to be a corporate shill. :puke:

14. Chelsea's presence on the campaign trail will not help her mom.
I know that this will be a Kodak "feel good" moment for you Hillary fans thinking that if Chelsea decides to campaign for her mom that she can shore up the young adult vote and soften her hard shell of an image but it's not going to work. It's just another strategic move to use her daughter the same way she is overly using Bill Clinton's presence and record to further the Hillary illusion of experience. It's best to keep her on the sidelines and maintain her privacy. Obama is well ahead in securing that demographic. Nice try again, Clinton.

19. Chelsea will be almost 30 in January of '09.
She's nobody's CHILD now. And we shouldn't treat her as one.

The sad thing is, whatever one think's of the Junior Senator from New York's candidacy, if she wins Chelsea's own life won't really start until her mother leaves office.

Yes, this statement is nothing but sheer nonsense... she doesn't even have to live in the WH if she chooses not to..

growing up I always had a secret crush on her. My giflfriend now thinks I was insane for that, but I did!

On a side note, if she's working with Hedge Funds she must be loaded. Good on her for not turning out drunk or sex-crazed or crazy like other child celebrities. And good on Bill and Hillary for shielding her and rasing her right while still running the country for 8 years.
