Ted was appointed by then governor Wally Hickel after the death of Democrat Bob Bartlett in 1968.

As for Don Young, he was defeated in November 1972 by Democrat Nick Begich, whose plane had already been missing for two weeks and who was subsequently declared dead in December. Young was then elected in a special election.

Lisa Murkowski, of course, was appointed by her daddy who quit the Senate early and went on to become THE most unpopular governor in the country. Our new governor, although a Republican, ran on an ethics platform (and against establishment Repubs), and so far has been doing a pretty decent job. She has a 90% approval rating.

We no longer have appointments here when there is a vacancy as a result of widespread anger over Lisa's appointment. If Ted or Don is taken out by the VECO scandal, we will have special elections and hopefully the Democrats will win. There are several good candidates, so prospects are good, especially in light of the other Republican indictments in our state legislature.

We do everything BIG up here -- including corruption. :)
