Schuyler's Pat Flynn begins run for Senate

Pat Flynn, a financial adviser from Schuyler, Neb., and a political novice, opened his bid for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, saying he wants to support God in the public sphere and troops in Iraq.
Flynn, 48, is a Republican and said he plans to run a grass-roots campaign.
"One of my values is faith. I just see that they're trying to detach God from the core of our country and I'm not willing to stand for that," said Flynn, who is Catholic and a longtime youth minister.
As an example of God being removed from society, Flynn said, is that "In God We Trust" has been stamped on the edge of the new dollar coin rather than on its face. He said the side inscription is too hard to see or read and can be "easily rubbed off."
"I think it's put on the edge for a reason, just to get rid of it," Flynn said in a telephone interview.
Flynn is the second Republican to enter the 2008 U.S. Senate race in Nebraska. The first was Attorney General Jon Bruning. Several other candidates — including former Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey and former GOP Gov. Mike Johanns — are waiting to see whether Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel seeks a third term.
