Murdoch 'WSJ' Takeover Enters 2008 Presidential Race -- As Edwards Demands Hillary Return His Money

By E&P Staff

Published: August 02, 2007 12:20 PM ET

NEW YORK Many journalists, media-watchers and some business analysts have weighed in, negatively, on the News Corp. takeover of Dow Jones Inc. Now it is becoming a political hot potato.

Former Sen. John Edwards not only condemned the move, he challenged any of his Democratic rivals in the race for president to return all campaign donations from Rupert Murdoch. He knows, of course, that Hillary Clinton recently got a nice check from him, and that Murdoch even hosted a fundraiser for her a few months back.

“News Corp’s purchase of the Dow Jones Co. and The Wall Street Journal should be the last straw when it comes to media consolidation," Edwards said in a statement today. "I’m challenging every Democratic presidential candidate to refuse contributions from News Corp executives and return any they've already taken, beginning with Rupert Murdoch."

He added: "The basis of a strong democracy begins and ends with a strong, unbiased and fair media –- all qualities which are pretty hard to subscribe to Fox News and News Corp. The reality is that Americans deserve more news outlets –- not fewer. It’s time for all Democrats, including those running for president, to stand up and speak out against this merger and other forms of media consolidation.

“Moreover, given Fox News’ consistent efforts to demean Democrats -- they have attacked the character of Senator Obama, Vice President Gore, and many others -- no Democrat running for president should accept campaign money from top News Corp executives....The time has come for Democrats to stop pretending to be friends with the very people who demonize the Democratic Party.”

5. He donated Rezko's money
So there isn't anymore there there.

Hillary should get away from Murdoch. It's so clear that he is not good for the country or the world. The media consolidation is one of the worst things that has happened to this country.

7. She allowed him to hold a fund raiser for her!

I don't feel comfortable with the Clinton's anymore. Bill and Poppy, Hillary and Murdoch.
Have they lost their minds? Bill Clinton gives George W. advise on occassion.

13. You're right in not feeling comfortable!
Hillary voted for the Iraq War (or to 'give Bush the authorization').
Hillary voted for the Military Commissions Act (Bush's way to make torture legal).
Hillary accepted money from Rupert Murdoch, owner of Faux Noise, which trashed Democrats on a daily basis.
Bill and George H.W. Bush are best pals.
And just yesterday I read on DU that some adviser of Hillary is married to an adviser of Bush (Sr.?).

Don't trust them.

8. NewsCorp President and COO has donated tens of thousands to Democrats and the DNC
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 02:12 PM by rinsd
I doubt Edwards is aware of that.

Actually I bet he is aware of it and he's counting on the knee jerk reaction of the left blogosphere to ignore it.

11. Edwards said all New Corp executives
Apparently he is unaware of Peter Chermin and how much he has donated to Democrats.

Though Chemin isn't perfect, he gave a $1K to Ted Stevens

14. They might be actual Democrats
Did you ever think of that? Wouldn't surprise me at all if some News Corp. employees are attracted to Edwards as well and have donated. They're not all shits like Rupert.

15. News Corp President and COO Peter Chemin certainly appears to be a Democrat
He's given tens of thousands to Democrats and the DNC while giving a few thousand to the odd Republican.
