Clinton disagrees with Obama’s ‘no nukes’ comment
Clinton disagrees with Obama’s ‘no nukes’ comment
By Klaus Marre
August 02, 2007

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, said Thursday that she disagrees with her closest rival, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), on the possible use of nuclear weapons.

Obama, according to an Associated Press story, had said earlier that he would not use nuclear weapons under any circumstances. He added that he opposes the use of the weapons if civilians are involved and then said, “Let me scratch that. There's been no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table.”

When asked about the comment, Clinton said she does not believe “that any president should make any blanket statements with respect to the use or non-use of nuclear weapons.”

1. Considering we went the entire Cold War without using nuclear weapons
I can't imagine why we would ever have to use them today.

2. I like Clinton a lot, but she needs to strike that "no president should make a blanket statement"
meme from her arsenal. It's been used too much, it says too little, and frankly, if there's one place a president should make a blanket statement, it is where Obama made it.

I mean, really, in the almost impossible-to-conceive event that a president would have to consider using nukes, past statements about not using them would be easily ignored. Not that anyone ever believes political promises, anyway. To paraphrase Captain Barbossa, "They aren't really promises, they're more like guidelines."

3. Did Obama Really Say That He'd Never Use Them?
I hadn't heard that before.

4. President should not make blanket statement against total omnicide?
Not that i would expect a President to take such a principled stand mind you, but i do think it is a good thing.

Eventually, this nation will come out firmly against destroying everyone on the planet.

But it certainly won't be under a clinton administration, just another gal who likes to keep her options open.

7. WILL NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY! PERIOD! That she is now declared
herslf to be "agnostic" about nuclear power, one can only wonder how far she would be able to go down that slippery slope! I know she was referring to electrical generating power, but once you open that door, it is a short step to considering use of nuclear weapons.

I can imagine her in the Oval Office with her aides "How about a few cute little tactical nukes - you know, just to scare them a little bit.!" If she is the Democratic candidate - I was not going to vote for her anyway. Now this just makes it an easier decision. Will never vote Republican, nor do I want to vote for a third party candidate. I like Edwards, and could live with one of the others, but not Hillary. I simply do not like her policies on a broad range of issues from Iraq to abortion, nor the platform of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC).

I can't believe in the last YouTube debate she called herself a "progressive." As a self-appointed member of that wing, who has actively worked against nuclear power and weapons proliferation, unionization of farmworkers and other workers, economic and environmental change, real rights for women, minorities, children and GLBT people, I do not associate my views with hers. She is a moderate Repulican in drag - at best! Sorry my fellow and sister democrats, please find a more representative candidate.

Any respectable President should make a blanket statement about not using nuclear weapons.

Didn't he previously say all options were on the table in dealing with Iran?

11. Obama never said he would use nukes...ever...
He did say all options are on the table regarding Iran...but the most important point is that diplomacy would be the major effort...and he never said he would use nukes, ferchrissakes...

If you can find ANYWHERE where he said he would use nukes on Iran, I'll buy you gas for the rest of your life.

13. All options, meaning all reasonable options, meaning not a nuclear first strike
He never said a nuclear strike was on the table. By all options, he was referring to a conventional military strike.

16. So, Hillary would use nuclear weapons in Pakistan or Afghanistan?
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 04:03 PM by Mass
Because this is what Obama was talking about, as clarified by AP in a second release.

If, once in a while, the MSM could get it right the first time, it would be great!

18. Not what she said...
Here is her exact quote...

"I think that presidents should be very careful at all times in discussing the use or non-use of nuclear weapons. Presidents, since the Cold War, have used nuclear deterrence to keep the peace. And I don't believe that any president should make any blanket statements with respect to the use or non-use of nuclear weapons."

She is saying you don't preannounce to our adversaries exactly what strategies we will and will not pursue...why give them that certainty?
