Edwards would be wise to adopt "New Deal 2008: Rebuilding America"
Call for a new public works program to rebuild the infrastructure that has been neglected until you don't know if a manhole is going to explode and a bridge is going to collapse. Put tens of thousands back to work by rebuilding our country before it slips into Third World status.

3. No way
We spend enough now. It would be an attractive option for him, because the trade unions would benefit. The issue is prioritizing spending - like, for crumbling bridges instead of bridges to nowhere - instead of increasing it.

5. Welcome to DU.
I don't think you'll find very many here who agree with you on this, however.

14. Actually, we don't
Public funding is cut to hell and back. Since St. Ronnie, public funding has been shredded. What little is spent either goes to needless pork projects, or is shoehorned into more upper-class areas. I've seen towns where the roads in affluent neighborhoods get re-done yearly while a few blocks over, the roads are pitted and patched with forty years' worth of asphalt varieties.

And when a road becomes completely unsafe, or the bridge buckles or collapses, or the pork gets exposed, these same Republican cretins try to use their fuckups as an example of why government can't be trusted and thus we should fund even LESS.

What you're proposing - money only for crumbling bridges - is goofy. It's capitalization on a single shocking incident to further reduce spending on transportation to just this one thing.

6. Sounds great to me
Just imagine, using the tax money we shell out to promote the safety of our country, while creating jobs at the same time. The illegal and immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq should end. The way things are right now, Bush and his cronies are destroying Iraq and the U.S., too.

This is such a no-brainer! We need a New Deal, not a Raw Deal!

16. It is a good idea, and you're right any candidate could go for this. I'd like to hear someone say -
"It's a little sad: my husband worked to build a bridge to the 21st century, but when I become President, one of the first things I'll have to do, thanks to two terms of George Bush, is to fix all the old 20th-century bridges."
