Controversial federal judgeship advances (Diane Feinstein sides with Repukes, tips scales)

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-9 on Thursday to advance President Bush's nomination of Leslie Southwick to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to the full Senate for a vote.

Southwick's nomination had been controversial because some Democrats were concerned that his writings were racially insensitive.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., voted with the Republicans.

Republicans said any vote on Southwick's nomination, even a procedural one such as Reid's, would put senators on record on whether Bush's nominees should receive up-or-down confirmation votes by the full Senate.

The 5th Circuit serves Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
