Virginia GOP Sees Warner Stepping Down

"Gloomy top Republicans in Virginia are privately predicting that a man named 'Warner' will be elected to the Senate from their state next year, but add that he is likely to be a Democrat," according to Robert Novak.

"The state's GOP leaders not long ago were sure that 80-year-old Republican Sen. John Warner would seek a sixth term in 2008, but now they think he probably will not. That would open the door for Democratic former Gov. Mark Warner (no relation) to enter the race. Any Republican would be an underdog against the Democratic Warner."

"Rep. Tom Davis is the leading prospect if John Warner doesn't run, but conservatives are seeking somebody to oppose Davis' nomination."

1. I'll take Mark over John any day.

They're equally interesting New Testment-wise but the first is infinitely superior to the second in Virginia politics.

There is a possibility here of a Senate pick-up. I think Mark Warner would be a huge plus. I have long appreciated his stand against capital punishment.

Also, I can barely stand to look at or hear Congressman Davis.

Go, Democrats.

2. I hope this works out for
for Mark Warner to win as a Senator from Virginia..the more Dem Senators we have the faster we tell lieman to go suck on his rubber toy soldiers.

3. Hiya, zidzi.
Good point. Let's elect more Democrats for a new generation of a Democratic majority in the Senate.

I think Joe Lieberman has run his last race for the Senate.

4. Hey, Crusoe!
That would be paydirt if lieman has dug his own political grave with his blatherings for more war, more killings, more fundraisers for republicons.

5. Agree. His own party already gave him the boot last time and he had to
have Republican help to defeat Ned Lamont.

I'd love to see Ned go at it again next time and whip all comers.

The plus initially would be losing Lieberman's pro-war votes but the long-term gain is Ned himself in the Senate for all the votes to come.

6. Hasn't Dodd said he won't be running for reelection to the Senate...
Regardless of how he does in the Presidential race?

8. Hmmm? If true then
maybe Lamont will run in that race. I know Lamont wanted someone to run against lieman and when there wasn't anyone he did it himself..so we shall see if he still has the fire within!

9. Well, if he wins the presidency, I think he'd likely step down in the Senate!
Hi, SaveElmer. I'd hate to see us lose Dodd's vote in the Senate, but he truly is presidential and would make a sound chief executive.

I'll accept your guidance on his plans for re-election. I'm new to that news and it has the potential of putting Ned Lamont or another Democrat in that chamber sooner.

Appreciate the update.

a great asset in the Senate for our country..you can see I'm not quite ready to let him go yet. :)

15. it's humorous that Novakula thinks
Davis is not conservative. He is. If the conservatives decide to pit someone even more conservative against Mark Warner, they will have no chance whatsoever. At least Davis is popular in his home district, due to all the constituent service, hand-shaking, etc., he's done.

12. If Mark runs, he'll beat anyone else in VA. What a joy to have Webb and Mark Warner
representing my state! Plus, we don't need 80-year olds running our country. With the odds of getting Alzheimer's increasing dramatically over age 75, we should have age limits on our lawmakers.

Rep Davis is a creep and should not be a Senator - nor a Rep for that matter.

14. If it is Warner vs Warner, John probably wins. But if it is Warner vs Davis, my money is on Mark
Warner. Conservative pubs will not turn out for Davis, particularly if there is a lackluster pub presidential candidate.
