Are we the only Party that cares about civil liberties?
Thought I'd take a break from reading about how awful our Party is to ask....what about the Republicans? I know the Republican Congress cannot stray from the Party line, but what about rank-and-file Republican voters? Do they care about the deceit and cover-ups of real crimes that this administration and their enabling rubberstampers are involved in? Is "winning" more important than their civil rights and their children's? Is anyone polling the Republican voter to ask why they aren't as outraged as we are?

EOM...please reload and fire at will.

1. No, there is the Green Party. I thought the Dems did care about
our civil rights etc but from their last vote, not so sure any more.

3. Some are! They just don't talk about it in public. That old Reagan
11th commandment "never talk ill of a fellow republican" really seems to have stuck with them. Privately however, many of them detest what has happened to their Party.

4. Between us and those who left the gop
and who now call themselves Libertarian there's got to be more than a few people in this country outraged by what's been going on since December of'00. I haven't heard of anyone polling the rank and file goper to assess their level of anger over * and what he's done.

5. Where I live, a lot of people believe the rhetoric that
we are in an existential struggle against "Islamofascism" or whatever and that all means are justified. Of course, this belief is predicated on another belief: that Bush has their best interests in mind. If someone above all just implicitly trusts Bush, then no, they don't care about things like the FISA bill etc.

On the other hand, those who try to label themselves "traditional conservatives" and the libertarian types have grown quite tired of all this sort of thing.

6. The Libertarian Party is concerned about your right to smoke pot.
Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 12:11 PM by IanDB1
Other than that, they don't care about much except deregulating every single thing in the world.

Just deregulate everything and legalize pot, and the Libertarians think everything else will just fall into place.

Groovy.

8. People in this country don't know they HAVE civil liberties....
because they've never been without them.

Most of the world understands from first hand experience how precious freedom from violently enforced curfews, mass arrests, and unfettered surveillance is. We do not. Most Americans would have eight kinds of cows if they went to get in their car one night for a short trip to the grocery store, and were grabbed by guys in tanks, thrown up against a wall, and had a rifle shoved in their faces.

Spoiled, smug, stupid, and lazy is what we Americans are.

Sorry. I'm not in a good mood.

9. I'm not sure the Dems care about civil liberties
given how many of them voted on the FISA legislation.

11. The only civil right most Repubs care about--
--is the "right" to own guns.
