I don't think I've heard anything about them in ten years or so. I wonder what they are up to, and what they're thinking about the encroachments on the Constitution.

Anyone know?

1. Interesting question...
I haven't heard a thing about them.

It's like they vanished when Bush became President. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

2. I read somewhere...

that the militia groups all joined the Republicans/Libertarians, and were fine with things because all of the civil liberties were only being taken away from brown people.

That doesn't surprise me.

4. Ask Baucus and Tester
They didn't vote against the FISA law to appease the left, that's for dang sure.

5. Here is an excellent link...

...that I think you may find useful: http://www.publiceye.org/

PRA is an excellent source of up-to-date info on militias, Christian Right, homegrown terrorism, neo-Nazi's, etc.

Contributors include Chip Berlet, Jean Hardisty, Sara Diamond, and a host of others. Search around their site; there is tons of good info and links to other sites.

Edit: click on "Racial Justice" in the upper right box and it will open another page with a link to "America under the gun" (again, a link in the upper right box of the new page) which will take you to bunches of up-to-date info on militias.

There have also been several good books put out recently; try "In God's Country" by Neiwert.
:D

6. No, and that's funny, because those idiots were so goddamn convinced
That the government was going to turn into a fascist police state and take all their guns away during the 90s.

Then, when Bush takes office and enacts fascist big brother policies that make the Waco incident look like a slap on the wrist, these "patriots" are silent.

I have NO respect for them. At all.

7. They've gone underground ever since the Oklahoma City bombing.
For the most part.
Some of them became more active on the internet right after the WWW was created when more people got on the internet.
But, over time they have dropped off of the internet because of the heavy surveillance they draw to themselves.
They hated Clinton, and they despised Gore, but I don't think they trusted Bush very much either.
Most of them believe the federal government is too corrupt for them to trust either party.
They have also had a lot of setbacks and confusion take place in their organizations because of their leaders dying or their leaders getting arrested for participating in under age sex or pornography rings.
Don't get me wrong, they're still out there, but they're just not as visible as they once were.

11. Mark Potok who does the research there used to share a back yard with me in Montgomery.
My Doberdor Phil and his black standard poodle Willy were best dog friends! He really knows if anyone does what is up in the extremist camps of every stripe.

10. Earlier this year a large cache and a soi disant "compound," made up mostly of rusted immobile bus
and tent combos was busted in NE Alabama, near Ft. Payne. They had machine guns, bazookas, etc.!
Everyone seemed quite shocked, assuming they were just up in their mountain hideaway cooking meth and possum, as they were not the usual North Alabamians with dog-sushi-lakefront property fetishists.
I don't think the case has come up to trial yet, and their ultimate goals beyond collecting heavy weapons is still unclear.
