Obama may have made an early gaffe that once again will raise the experience question. He just said he would call the "president of Mexico and president of Canada...". The problem? Canada does not have a president. It has a prime minister...

it's the lack of diplomacy, skill, ignorance, arrogance, stubbornness and a seriously flawed foreign policy that has us in this bind. I don't mind a gaffe over a title, but a gaffe over foreign policy I detest.

The Prime Minister commented later that he had to explain to Bush where Prince Edward Island was before he could discuss the ban. Obama's comment is even worse than that, IMO.

18. Well, Canada is one of our closest friends and allies.
And Canada is our largest trading partner.

They joined us in our war in Afghanistan, where they're still there. They refrained from joining Bush's war in Iraq, but that was just good sense on their part.

Yes, it is a big deal, in my opinion. If Obama wants to be President Obama, it would be kind of nice to know about our friends to the North.

84. I know all about Canada... that's why I'm not hard on people about it.
The post of Governor-General is one of the least intuitive things for an American to remember about Canada, all that representing the Queen stuff and so on. Some people on this thread seem to think only "perfect" people should be presidents. That, in and of itself, is 4th grade foolishness.

Obama is a constitutional scholar, right? Surely you're not questioning his intelligence? So why use a slip against him as a sign that he's not worthy to lick Hillary's shoes?

86. Did I say he wasn't worthy to lick Hillary's shoes?
There is quite a substantial gulf between "perfect" and "lacking basic knowledge about other countries."

I'm honestly pretty perplexed that so many DUers are so willing to give Obama a pass or claim this is petty when DUers ripped into Bush for calling Spain's PM a "president." Spain's PM's official title is "legislative president" so Bush was almost correct with his gaffe.

Additionally, I'm not sure that this was a slip. Generally when people make slips of this silliness, they immediately correct themselves. Since neither you nor I nor any other DUer can read Obama's mind (despite the fact that many of them would like to pretend they can), I'll have to assume that he acts and speaks like most people and that when he said "President of Canada" and didn't correct himself he really thought that Canada had a president.

Our Governor Generals name is Michaëlle Jean and the Prime Minister chooses the GG who is then named GG by the queen. She has very little say in who is appointed and has to appoint whomever the PM recommends.

the PM chooses her. Some Americans think the Queen chooses the GG. Not true. Paul Martin chose our current GG, well recommended her, and the queen had to appoint her. I don't think there has ever been a case of the queen refusing to appoint a GG that a prime minister has recommended, right?

Frankly I'll take someone that answers questions, has detailed and maleable plans to fix things, and is vocally against the corporate lobbying groups. 63. maybe the Senator knows something we don't know!
Fellow Canadians -- it's what we've always suspected -- they're going to invade us!

Ironically, the Democrats would have a lot more to gain than the Republicans would. If Canada became another state (or even a collection of states), it's a pretty fair bet that most of the electoral votes would be going to the Dems. All regions (even Alberta) have consistently preferred Democratic presidents in the US (certainly for the elections with Bill Clinton, Gore, and Kerry).

What matters is the media will use this as another reason he is "not ready for prime time". He really can't afford to make these mistakes. It's not fair but there it is.

to know that Canada doesn't have a president, so they won't make it an issue. Also, because it's not a big deal to begin with.

70. It's not one thing...
It's now they are keeping a list of all his gaffes and he is making more now that the race is heating up. It doesn't matter if the audience wouldn't know, they expect him to know.

Look, he is running against a woman who does not allow herself to make mistakes, not missteps like this, and he has the "rookie" tag on him. Like I said it's not fair but that is the race.

73. Hey lots of countries have presidents and PM's. Iraq does.
To understand the vestige governor-general system and how Canada's head of state is technically the Queen, but she has an acting head of state called a governor-general, hey, if Americans wanted to live under a system like that, there wouldn't have been any war of independence. Even if you know it, remembering it is not going to be natural for everyone when you're in the middle of talking about other countries that DO have presidents.

That's why I said earlier that it's nitpicking.

unknown to me, Obama, Obama's supporters and team are constantly telling us "what" he meant to say, "what" he said was different than "what" we heard and these little, tiny, wee mistakes are meaningless.

He's making too many little mistakes, IMHO.

You are right, MaineDem. We have beat GW*B to death over his "little" mental lapses, forgetting names and getting mixed up.

I'm not up for another 4 or 8 years of trying to interpret what the prez means to say but doesn't.

This may be a nit pick, too ...what's up with "O" starting evey sentence with "LOOK"?

It's annoying to say the least.

& Pat Buchanan does it. :puke:

81. He's definitely a guy with an ever-changing history
On and on he kept reminding us that he'd been praising Musharraf and saying that we should work with him. He made it sound like he'd been repeatedly on the record with this, only once saying that we might have to go over his head in an extreme case. Boy, I'd like to hear ANY of those statements of late. The thrust of the statement that got him into trouble was one of being a no-nonsense tough-guy going after duplicitous bullshit, not one of a conscientious ally. What hogwash.

He also kept repeatedly saying "the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan" (which is a place that doesn't exist; you're either in one country or the other) in an attempt to distance himself from the statement of needing to be on the "right battlefield on Afghanistan and Pakistan".

It's more of the "whatever I say" presidency. For this wholesale disregard for reality and his own statements, he's in a league with Cheney. The whole approach reeked of deliberate deception, and far too many of his acolytes just eat it up. His answers were transparent distortions, yet one poster on this board even calls him "god". That's not "A god" or "god jr." or "associate god", that's the biggest and mightiest of the mighty himself. In a way, this is worse than the demagoguery of the Deanies at their worst, and it almost rivals some of the extremists among the Clark camp. (I said almost; that's an awfully high bar to clear...)

95. No, that's not the intention
I should certainly stay away from any comparison to someone as truly evil as Cheney, though. Obama's not even a member of that species.

The problem is the rewriting of history, with which I have a HUGE problem. Obama's head and shoulders above any other candidate here on that issue--which is not to his credit--and I used an unfortunate comparison here.

Be fair though, what I wrote is NOT a straight equating of Obama and Cheney, and for you to resort to that is distortion of your own. If my hyperbole was overly strident by association with a despicable individual (Cheney), yours is at least as inflammatory.

I actually put a fair amount of efforts into my posted annoyances; the problem here is that I'm getting increasingly frustrated with Mr. Obama's flagrant rewriting of his personal history, and I'm getting even more annoyed with some of his partisans seeing nothing wrong with this. Just because a person's "good", many think he/she is exempted from the normal societal restrictions of honesty. At some point, the person is no longer "good" if the person is willing to distort and deny with regularity, and the person's judgment is in serious question to try it in this age of instant factual recall.

I'll back off from the comparisons like this, but I was having a difficult time coming up with an example of someone as guilty of distorting events. It's a BIG issue, and it seems to be just fine with far too many.

So, I suck here; what do you have to say for yourself? Upon rereading my post, is it even slightly fair to characterize that as saying that Obama equals Cheney? Were you REALLY unsure about that, or was that a rhetorical question in a backhanded smeary kind of way? For my misstep, does that open me up to such tactics and absolve you of the obligation of fairness to which I should be held?

Having said all that, your point is well taken: the subject matter is incendiary enough; I should keep away from comparisons to any traits displayed by certain true skunks like the VP.

Was your summation called-for? Is this just part of the way of the shadow warrior?

Dear Mr. or Ms. Victim, I don't want to burst your bubble, but you're making a claim that Obama is simply not part of the reality-based community. Don't bother walking away from that claim. You obviously believe it. That's fine with me.

97. Identical tactics don't mean the people are exactly the same
So I guess you're backing off from suggesting I'm saying Obama is equal to Cheney. Thanks for the retraction; it was quite mature of you.

I'm not backing away from my observation about Obama's deliberate distortion of history and I didn't do that in the second post in this exchange; he IS veracity challenged on this issue and he's done it quite a few times. If it makes you feel more adult to characterize people who disagree with you as being somehow emotionally inferior and wallowing in victimhood, feel free; glad to bring joy. How you read this from that post, however, is mystifying.

I've backed away from using any comparison between Cheney's tactics and Obama's because that's just too highly-charged a reference to use and expect any rational discourse.

You use a fine term here that was pioneered by this administration, and to continue the allusion further, he DOES create his own reality and he seemingly scoffs at anyone who questions his interpretations of his own words. How you get the impression I'm retracting that is beyond me, so you can drop that assumption. That's precisely what he's doing, it's not an admirable trait and I'll bring it up again if he sees fit to continue with such twaddle.

Gotta be honest with you here... I haven't really decided on a candidate yet, so I don't really have a dog in the hunt at this point.

That being said, you bringing up this particular point is one of the most banal, sophomoric, knuckle-dragging bullet-points I've come across in a long, long time.

Might I suggest you edify the candidate you have chosen rather than wasting time by tearing down the candidates other have chosen...

If he gave a speech where he repeatedly referred to the "President of Canada," that might be cause for alarm. In a throwaway line in a debate, it doesn't strike me as significant.

who referred to (Canadian PM Brian) Mulroney as 'Muldoon'.

(Yes, Canada and New Zealand *are* pretty much the same country!)

And Gerald Ford once gave his best wishes to President Sadat and 'your great country of Israel' - this was before Camp David, when the two countries were still bitter enemies.

Compared with that, Obama's gaffe seems pretty minor.
