Poll question: Who lost the debate tonight?
We all know in Chrrissy Matthew's world that John Edwards lost the debate. Who actually lost?

4. Yup, looks like ol' Joe is gunning for Veep ...
Otherwise, why would he attack Edwards so viciously? He lost a lot of what little respect I had for him tonight.

He brushed off the question of a woman in the public and kept attacking Obama and Edwards in a very condescending way. A complete jackass.

11. Edwards.
But I think he always loses because his lip service doesn't match his record.

However, in terms of audience support, I'd say Biden after he practically dissed that woman who's husband died in the Sago mine.

35. Ah, the Clark wars continue
I almost wish he would announce, just so posters on this board could see the true stripes of some of the most vehement of his supporters. Yes, Edwards was supposed to kneel before the conquering hero in '03 and bow out of the race. What do you expect? Johnny's just a backwoods ingrate who doesn't cotton to aristocracy.

How endlessly tiresome.

He had no answer for her. So he referred her to the Fine Coal Miners Union President. Anyone on this thread, who is not in the coal industry, answer her question.

There was no fucking reason for him to go after Edwards like that. That is unless he was being a hatchet man for someone afraid to look like she's starting another fight.

16. Edwards deserved exactly what he got.
He hails from North Carolina, a right to work state and tries to be the champion of labor. Biden has been a champion of labor for 34 years. Not just the last 2 years, when Edwards had nothing else to do.

29. I think Biden and Edwards
were the biggest losers. Biden started strong, but lost it when he changed the subject on the question from the miner's widow.

Edwards just failed to step up. He had a few moments, but this should've been his real chance to shine, and I just don't think he succeeded.

34. I thought the same thing, for the same reasons.
Since he's been aggressively courting the union vote, this should have been Edwards' night to shine, but he didn't, and Biden lost his good start when he botched the widow's question.

30. Clinton. And did anyone notice when she said she didn't want her children
getting sick off food from China?

If Obama had one child and claimed to have more than that, the pundits would say he was crazy. They would reference Dean's awkward scream, which four years ago they assured us meant Dean was insane and unfit to be president. They would play it over and over again, and bring on someone from the Family Research Council to claim that Obama was probably too busy giving out condoms to two year olds that he forgot how many were actually his.

33. Well, I understand what she meant.
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 09:32 AM by AnotherGreenWorld
I understand that she was speaking as if she were in the shoes of the average American parent. It really shouldn't be an issue. But if she were any other Democrat, this would be a huge issue. I don't even like Dean. But all Dean did was scream and that, we were told, disqualified him as president. Imagine if he had said this in 2004, people would've said, "Man that guy is insane! Get that guy some medication!" Etc. Same thing for Kerry.

Another example: asked if she would be willing to meet with the US's enemies, she responds that she won't promise. The pundits praise her, not pointing out that she didn't even answer the question.

40. This is the question.
COOPER: Let's go to another YouTube video.

QUESTION: In 1982, Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that has lasted ever since.

In the spirit of that type of bold leadership, would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?

COOPER: I should also point out that Stephen is in the crowd tonight.

Senator Obama?

OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them -- which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration -- is ridiculous.

(APPLAUSE)

Now, Ronald Reagan and Democratic presidents like JFK constantly spoke to Soviet Union at a time when Ronald Reagan called them an evil empire. And the reason is because they understood that we may not trust them and they may pose an extraordinary danger to this country, but we had the obligation to find areas where we can potentially move forward.

And I think that it is a disgrace that we have not spoken to them. We've been talking about Iraq -- one of the first things that I would do in terms of moving a diplomatic effort in the region forward is to send a signal that we need to talk to Iran and Syria because they're going to have responsibilities if Iraq collapses.

They have been acting irresponsibly up until this point. But if we tell them that we are not going to be a permanent occupying force, we are in a position to say that they are going to have to carry some weight, in terms of stabilizing the region.

COOPER: I just want to check in with Stephen if he believes he got an answer to his question.

QUESTION: I seem to have a microphone in my hand. Well, I'd be interested in knowing what Hillary has to say to that question.

COOPER: Senator Clinton?

CLINTON: Well, I will not promise to meet with the leaders of these countries during my first year. I will promise a very vigorous diplomatic effort because I think it is not that you promise a meeting at that high a level before you know what the intentions are.

I don't want to be used for propaganda purposes. I don't want to make a situation even worse. But I certainly agree that we need to get back to diplomacy, which has been turned into a bad word by this administration.

And I will purse very vigorous diplomacy.

And I will use a lot of high-level presidential envoys to test the waters, to feel the way. But certainly, we're not going to just have our president meet with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez and, you know, the president of North Korea, Iran and Syria until we know better what the way forward would be.

---

Answering "I won't promise to..." does not answer "would you be willing to..." Her reply, moreover, makes it seem as though Obama actually did promise. Of course he did no such thing. All that Obama said was that he would be willing to meet with the US's enemies. Clinton's answer, that she won't promise, is consistent with both being willing to meet and being unwilling to meet with the US's enemies.

42. Clinton lost and got the most boos. But if you ask the MSM, she won...
No matter WHAT Obama says, he's said to be wrong an "inexperienced" and Hillary's said to be right and "presidential." Bull! Last night, Obama was attacked by Dodd, Hillary, and Biden, and Obama kicked butt by sticking with his position. He was cheered on. Hillary, Dodd, and Biden were all booed, but the MSM painted it as "Hillary stayed above the fray" and had the others attack Obama FOR her. That's FALSE. Hillary very MUCH tried to attack Obama again, saying "a president" should be very careful with what they say (implying, again, he's irresponsible), and that you shouldn't always say what you're thinking. That's staying above the fray? I don't think so! But the MSM has already crowned her the Dem. nominee (just so they can tear her down in the general election). Don't let them do it!!!
