Anyone else offended by K.O. asking ONLY Obama a sports question? |
|
I thought it was racist. Curious to see what you guys thought about it.

1. ...Obama's the youngest candidate by a lot, right? |
|
You sure it's race and not age? I didn't see the question, so I'm just musing.

3. I think it was due to the youth factor. Plus, it helped BO a bit by reinforcing his cool image |

2. I would have preferred he throw the hometown boy a Bears question. |
|
Just for the crowd. It has no effect on the vote, but would have made the locals smile.

But, KO asked Barack about Barry Bonds then turned to Hillary and asked her about Katrina.

It was a character question ... probing Bond's character a little and Obama's rather more deeply. It allowed Obama to address a broader moral issue ... we want integrity from our sports figures, right? So the children have good examples, right? Need that from political leadership too ...
I am not an Obama supporter ... yet. But I think Obama correctly perceives a pattern of ethical decay in our society that starts at the top and trickles down. The question gave him another angle on that theme, and he did pretty well with it.

Maybe this country is not ready to elect a black man or a woman as president.
I mean, why are so many people reading into a question to a candidate as something racial? Are they trying to make it racial? and why the wondering about Hillary getting the question about Katrina? Was it because the hurricane bore a woman's name?
This is getting kind of ridiculous, isn't it?

10. It was a question of character. He handled it correctly. |
|
Plus Obama is a huge sports fan. Time could have been better spent asking an issues question.

12. I suppose if it had been the other way around |
|
people would have been asking "Did he ask Hillary about Barry Bonds because he expects a woman not to know anything about sports? Was that a gotcha question?" and "Did he ask Obama about Katrina because he was expecting a black man to get up on his high horse about how poor African Americans were neglected in a disaster?"
I've concluded that he can't win for losing. Whatever questions he asked of anyone would have been interpreted by someone as inappropriate, deliberately used to attack someone, frivolous, or just plain wrong.

15. And those would have been legitimate questions |
|
The Barry Bonds question was weird, I don't know where it came from. Nothing wrong with wondering about it. Talking about these things is how racial barriers are broken down.

14. I'll listen to Keith's explanation |
|
But I did think it was very weird when he asked it. If there isn't some underlying reason to ask Obama a baseball question, then I would conclude it was racist. It's the kind of racism that white people often don't think about. Like black people all know each other. Like Obama has to have an opinion about Barry Bonds just because they're both black. Sad but true.

It's like the old cliche, "Don't all you black people know each other" idea. It was overtly racist. It was also just a stupid and dumb questions that had no place in this debate when there were so many more important questions to be asked. Not only was I apalled at who he gave that question too, I was disgusted he used an important forum for a plug for NBC Sports and the '08 Beijing Olympics. I know this is breaking news to a lot of people but sports are NOT the most important issue in this world at the moment, and never have been. They are diversions. If we spent more time focusing on real issues in this country instead of stupid diversions we might not be in the shape we're in right now.
