It's about more than the Presidential election. It's about more than adding a few seats in Congress. When we usher out this corrupted and failed administration, we need to seize the opportunity to change the very nature of political and social dialogue in this country.
It has to be about hope rather than fear.
It has to be about what we "can do" rather than what we "can't do."
It has to be about empowering individuals as well as building community. We have to remember what it means to be a "can do" culture. We CAN fight global warming. We CAN help protect the planet. We CAN eliminate poverty and expand the values of freedom throughout the rest of the world, not by the force of military might, but by the force of our will and our belief in humanity itself.
At a time when the whole world stands on the brink of miraculous advances in medical, computer, and energy technologies, we cannot fall back and allow other nations to take the lead from us. We cannot allow the short-sightedness and greed of the few rob us of the potential to make a difference in so many lives today, and make a difference to the future of our children and grandchildren tomorrow.
The only thing the Republicans seem to have faith in is the right to make over the rest of the world by military might. They have abandoned any notion of America as a shining example of freedom and democracy. They ignore the will of the people and yet trumpet the idea that they're "spreading freedom and democracy" elsewhere. They're spreading something all right, but it's not freedom and democracy. It's hate and fear and injustice hidden behind a curtain of disinformation. It's wrong and wrong-headed.
And most of us know it.
What we offer is a new road, a road leading out of the valley of darkness into a new age of prosperity for everyone. A future filled with wonder and the "can-do" spirit that made America what it is. We can lead the search for renewable energy and better means of storing it. We can take back the lead in medical research, and the quest to tap into the resources to be found out in our solar system, resources that can take the place of those that are dwindling here on Earth.
It requires that we reinvent ourselves as a nation. It requires that we embrace science as a tool rather than condemn it as some shadowy menace. A tool for change, for renewal, for revitalization, for the restoration of everything we once thought about ourselves as Americans.
We can become that America again, the groundbreaker, the peacemaker, the innovator with one foot on the ground and arms lifted toward the sky. That America is not dead, it is merely sleeping. It has been betrayed by those who fear science, and glorify ignorance, people who want to steal true knowledge from your children, and replace it with fear of anything they don't yet understand.
We must reinvent ourselves as a nation, renew ourselves as a civilization. We must learn to embrace the unknown, to seek answers to the deepest questions, and to never, never, abandon the idea that we can do what we set out to accomplish.
Failure is not an option.
We CAN give all our citizens affordable healthcare.
We CAN take care of our returning veterans and not abandon them in their hour of need.
We CAN teach our children how to survive and thrive in a more competitive world.
We CAN rebuild our infrastructure.
We CAN free ourselves from reliance on someone else's oil.
We CAN eliminate homelessness and hunger.
We CAN free ourselves from hatred based on race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
We CAN restore hope and prosperity to those who have lost both.
We CAN reach into the sky and forge a bridge to the last frontier.
We CAN and we WILL.
Anything else is unthinkable.
