Obama’s new Iowa ad
Obama’s new Iowa ad
Posted: Wednesday, August 08, 2007 1:43 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Categories: Democrats, 2008

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Obama launched a new slick biographical ad, touting himself the candidate who can bring “unity,” who can bring both parties together. An announcer rehashes Obama’s days as a community organizer and state legislator.

The 60-second ad is a “limited buy” that will run on broadcast and cable outlets across Iowa beginning today.

Here’s the full transcript:
Title: “What If”
OBAMA: I'm Barak Obama, and I approve this message.

ANNOUNCER: What if? What if there was hope, instead of fear? Unity, instead of division? What if we had a president that believes that we are one nation?

OBAMA (from speech): There is not a liberal America and a conservative America, there is the United States of America.

ANNOUNCER: Barack Obama -- an organizer who helped communities devastated by plant closings. A state legislator who brought Republicans and Democrats together, who won healthcare for 150 thousand people. A leader with the judgment to oppose the Iraq war before it began. A senator who championed reforms to reign in the power of lobbyists. What if we could restore America's place in the world, and peoples' faith in our government?

OBAMA (speech SOT): We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

11. So calling Hillary Bush Cheney light is not attacking?
I think that is the foulest thing you could ever call a democrat.

13. So, when he's called "naive" and "inexperienced" he should just not say anything?
And, if the name fits.

21. He got schooled in the last debate and got pissed off at Hillary for upstaging him
So he tried to clarify his position on talking to foreign leaders, then he tried to spin it. She put him in his place so he called her names. Thats real classy.

...Barging into a thread that encourages unity with low-brow, baseless quips representing their of version of "truthiness"... Bah. Typical.

22. It's called a presidential primary
You know, where candidates from the same party differentiate themselves from each other? Just like Edwards, Clinton, Kucinich, Biden, Richardson, Dodd, and Gravel are doing?

It's called democracy. Stick around, you'll get the hang of it. :hi:

Really an exceptionally compelling example of the usually dull candidate biography genre.

5. Great Ad!!
A message of hope, accomplishments, and unity. Some might not like it because he points out his being against the Iraq war from the beginning.

19. I like Obama. But I don't think this is a good ad.
Ignoring the cheesy "what if" bit, considering how unknown he still is among many, it would be better, I think, if his first few ads avoided pronoun use, preferring to use his name as much as possible, because name recognition is so important.

Definitely better than the terrible ad Romney has running Iowa now though, an ad that will likely cost him a few supporters.

23. I'm bothered by something . . .

the noun "state legislator" should never appear in an ad for
the office of president of the united states.

25. extraordinarily cheap shot
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 05:03 PM by hijinx87
you're intentionally overlooking her full first term in the
senate, as opposed to (since you seem to want to make the
comparison, at least make it honestly) less than a year in
the senate for obama, most of which has been spent running
for president.

but of course, that doesn't sound too sexy on the resume.

26. Intentionally cheap actually...
This petty BS between some of the Hillary/Obama/Edwards supporters is ridiculous. You say that State Legislator shouldnt be mentioned as valid experience... why is that?

27. I was criticizing the ad, not the man.
it shouldn't be included in his list of qualifications, at least not worded
that way, because it makes him sound like a lightweight. that is the primary
line of attack against him by his opponents, his alleged inexperience. his
very own ad played right into their hands. it was a tactical campaign mistake.

but at least you admit it was a cheap shot, and that it was intentional.

participating in the same practice that you criticize is, well, hypocritical.
