Obama and Pakistan
08.09.07 -- 11:16AM
By Josh Marshall

Clearly, no Republican can quibble with this. They're on the record for invading countries because they might become dangers to us at some point in the future. They're hardly in a position to disagree with Obama if he says we'll hunt down people who committed mass casualty terror attacks within our borders. And I'm not sure Democrats are in much of a position to do so either.

The unspoken truth here, I suspect, is that Obama has struck on the central folly of our post-9/11 counter-terrorism defense policy -- strike hard where they aren't and go easy where they are. I think everyone can see this. But Obama got their first. So they need to attack him for saying it.

1. Josh Marshall nails it, totally. Don't back down, Obama--
they will all have to agree with you, eventually--you were just the first to rip the bandaid off the festering wound of our failed terrorism policy, so you get the blame. Imagine if those words had come out of any other of the older candidates' mouths--there would have been no charge of naivete or inexperience, just a general reaction of agreement (and very little attention). Obama's a threat to both parties' establishment candidates, and he can expect the most heat--but he's a fighter.

2. You're right? He did nail it.
He also owns something that the Republicans can't use in the general. They can't attack him for not wanting to go after the terrorits, and they can't claim they are different than Bush by saying they would go after Osama Bin Laden. Obama owns it now.
