1. i am as long as
they deserve it. I try to give even the worst candidates a second chance. Of course we must always be pragmatic. All members have a greater voice if we are in the majority. Still there are strategic issues that go beyond party loyalty.

Edited on Thu Aug-09-07 04:02 PM by welshTerrier2
the truth is, I expect there are some people in the republican party who are very supportive of protecting Constitutional freedoms. look, for example, at people like Bob Barr who joined the ACLU ...

to ask about party loyalty without looking at the party on a more granular level seems to leave us supporting all sorts of candidates and issues that do not deserve our support.

i am loyal to the Democratic Party as long it holds dear the values I hold dear.

by the way, the OP only asked about "Party Loyalty"; not Democratic Party loyalty. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. He might as well have asked what we thought of Nazi Party loyalty ...

3. I tend to use left handed logic
I am loyal to the democratic party because that is the best way (in this era of history) to combat the evil and nasty and downright incompetent party of bush and limbaugh and faux.

So on election day, I'm gonna whup right through that ballot, every democrat on it.

8. Party loyalty as in...
Edited on Thu Aug-09-07 03:58 PM by TechBear_Seattle
"Because I am a Republican, I can not and will not express any discontent or condemnation against the President"? Blinkered, if not blind, loyalty that renders one incapable of even the most basic of thinking skills? That kind of loyalty?

Or do you mean party loyalty as in, "Because I am a Democrat and belive in what the Democratic Party has long held up as its ideals, I will express my discontent and condemn any party member who violates those ideals"?

There is a significant difference between those two types of loyalty. I am strongly against the first, and strongly support the second.

10. "Party loyalty" can be damn dangerous...
Parties change over time -- back in the Civil War days I would have spit on the Democratic Party and supported the Republican Party. My party loyalty only goes to a party that is closest to my vision of how I want this country to be. And if the Democrats abandon that shared vision -- sorry, but adios muchachos.

14. I'm all for party discipline.
But I'm also all for fighting to make the Democratic Party a party of the left. I want the progressive core of the party to assume a leading role. So I'm for struggling for that in the appropriate fora, but, after a decision has been reached, I do think Democrats should unify and fight for the agreed program, yes.

because I believe they are more like me than the repubs and ultimately will do more to straighten this mess out. This does not mean I see them going as far left as I would like because the political climate of today just won't allow it. We have to take one step at a time regardless of how frustrating it is.

So, yes - I guess so.

And, despite the views of those who are "statement voters" or "idealogue" WINNING is EVERYTHING. We must WIN in order to effect change. And we must WIN by a large enough margin to be unassailable!

28. Unassailable to do what, exactly?
If winning is everything, then this is no more than a sport to you, unfortunately, unlike 99% of sports out there, the policies and positions of the "teams" actually affect the lives of everyone in the nation. It doesn't help to be on a winning team that sells out the interests of damned near everyone they are supposed to represent.

And by siding with other parties and splitting the vote all that happens is the GOP WINS again.Nothing is as bad as that scenario. They will destroy us all.We must unite to defeat them.

43. I'm already getting buyer's remorse for voting for Claire McCaskill...
Let me count the ways, she voted for the Iraq Supplemental, Against the Clean Energy Act, for a stupid assed amendment for a damned border fence, and for this recent FISA debacle. In addition she also voted for yet another stupid amendment to a bill calling for "English as a Common language" and yet another declaring "English as a National Language". You know, I didn't vote for stupidity, if I wanted that, I would have voted Republican.

She voted for the SCHIP expansion(good), is Pro-Choice, but also supports a Partial Birth Abortion Ban(which is stupid), and voted for Stem Cell research(good). Plus she's wishy washy on most other issues besides the ones I criticized already.

Does this include the FISA capitulators? How about the Iraq Supplemental capitulators?

If it does, count me out. I live in Indiana. Evan Bayh will NEVER get a vote of mine again. Same if I move to a district with a Dem who voted for either of the capitulations.

I'll go so far as to say I don't think that anyone should give to the national fund raising arms of the party since money might go to the capitulators. We have the actblue pages, etc.

Dem capitulators? :nuke:

Primary season is the right and proper time to explore all the different priorities we share as democrats.Don't start reducing my options yet. We all know trying to get three dems to agree that the sky is blue can be a challenge. Same as it ever was.

I, for one hope our field of hopefuls mix it up and go for it with everything they have.

I will support the nominee, but what gets said, and by who, during the campaign matters.

I didn't feel they offered anything especially interesting, and the only insight I felt I got from it was into you,not Nader.Any valid points you may make about Nader, and there are valid criticisms that even I share, are completely overshadowed by your beyond obvious obsession.

If I wanted to listen to another demagogue I'd listen to Stalin or Nader.
