Daub still undecided about Senate seat

FREMONT, Neb. - Hal Daub, who is considering a run for the U.S. Senate, is winding down his listening tour.

The former Omaha mayor says that after visiting 87 out of Nebraskas 93 counties, he is still undecided about whether to seek the Republican Senate nomination. But, he plans to make a decision later this fall.

"I'm not a candidate. I may not be a candidate," Daub told about 16 people gathered this morning at a Fremont coffee shop, before he presided over discussions about the Iraq War, illegal immigration and rural economics.

Daub is one of several Republicans and Democrats considering a run for what may or may not be an open seat. Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel has yet to say whether he will run for a third term or step down, paving the way for a wide-open race that could attract a large field.

Hagel has said that he will make an announcement in the next month or two, although political pundits in Washington, D.C., and in the State Capitol in Lincoln are privately speculating that he plans to retire.

Speculation is also ripe in the Nebraska Capitol that Hagel is out and that former Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns is getting set to return to Nebraska and run for Hagel's seat.

As much as I dislike Hagel, I think I'd rather have him in the seat than Daub.

Of course, I'd prefer a (D) pickup, but that may not be terribly realistic.

2. Hal Daub stuck this city will a huge debt (Qwest Center) and he was

a spendaholic. Not to mention he couldn't get along with anybody. And that hair, we didn't call him Daubula for nothing.
