Congressman Fired Up by Prospect of Draft (Rangel)
The so-called war czar who oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has once again raised the issue of whether or not America might consider reinstituting a military draft.

"I think it certainly makes sense to consider it," Lt. Gen. Douglas Luke told NPR. "And I can tell you this has always been an option on the table. But, ultimately this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security one means or another."

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., is a long-time champion of the idea. The chair of the House Ways and Means Committee said he believes a draft would spur a change in the war.

"They'll get out of Iraq so fast if they thought that Middle America had to make any sacrifices," Rangel said today on "Good Morning America Weekend Edition." "But I do believe that any time our great country is at war, it shouldn't be sacrifices just by the low or middle-income people. Everyone should share the sacrifice."

Bet the Young Repukes and their families wouldn't talk so tough if there was a chance their mostly lily-white butts would get drafted. They'd be all whining with fake injuries!

3. The debate on the draft should be played out.......
If only to make the 'chicken-hawks' stand up and do their part. We know they won't! They'll just follow the chief chicken-hawks like Bush & Cheney to some defensive rathole to explain why they couldn't help their country in time of need. They have done this before, so let's have the debate!

5. You guys are so fucking scary! Do you remember NOTHING about the 60's and the draft?
I can't believe what I'm reading on this board today about this subject!

We won't need a draft if we start electing those who want to make peace instead of war. Why should anyone else die for this madness?

6. Charlie Rangel, a Hillary supporter, is delusional.
Or military is about to break from endless deployments. They are about to do what the Russain army did in 1917 and quit the war. A draft will infuse new blood on the war machine. The Iraq war will go on for decades.

7. I can't believe it either.
The only explanation I can come up with is that there is a large number of delusional people.

What they don't realize is that if a draft were to ever take place, we'd be spreading the war to Iran.

10. But don't you see the benefit from having this discussion?
This topic is pissing people off. It's raising their ire and getting their passion going. It is a debate we need to have. I really don't want a draft, but do want some sort of shared sacrifice from all Americans. I want ALL Americans to really pull their heads out of their tvs, ipods and pcs and understand we are at WAR. Our young people are dying and NOTHING in America has fundamentally changed.

Having a faux-volunteer military has only allowed the majority of Americans to take our military for granted.

This discussion is reminding us somewhat of these things.

11. That is not shared sacrifice.
How is a draft anything close to shared sacrifice? It will be those who are under age thirty who are going to do all the sacrificing. Right now, they are already the ones dying in Iraq! How are they not already the ones sacrificing?

12. Don't know about you, but...
Where I'm at (the bread basket of America and supposedly one of the areas known as a test market for the US) it is almost like the Iraq War is not even going on. People don't discuss it and the local community is quite mum about it. And when has our govt ever said anything like JFK to it's people about doing things for our country?

Having this debate might shake some people up a bit.

And those sacrificing now are pretty much drowned out by the "volunteered for it" mantra.

13. Even The Bread Basket Voted Some New Democrats Into Office
I think a desire to end the war had something to do with that.
