Since the XXII amendment was adopted, no President has had a good second term...
Edited on Wed Aug-15-07 10:47 AM by Lobster Martini
The XXII amendment limiting Presidential terms was adopted in 1951. Since then, there have been ten presidents. (Truman doesn't count, he was already president in 1951.) None has completed a second term without having at least one good scandal, failing to be reelected, being impeached or getting shot.

Line-up:

Eisenhower -- admittedly giving him a pass until I do more reading
Kennedy -- one term for obvious reasons
Johnson -- declined to run for reelection
Nixon -- resigned
Ford -- not elected President in the first place, not reelected, narrowly missed being shot because the shooter was incompetent
Carter -- one term
Reagan -- Iran-Contra scandal and shot
Bush I -- one term
Clinton -- impeached (shouldn't have been, but that's another issue)
Bush II -- multiple scandals and the wheels falling off the horse cart as I write this...

Might as well limit presidents to one term, because that second one is cursed...

1. Guess it depends on your definition of "good."
First off, Reagan was shot in his first term.

But Clinton's major accomplishments happened in his second term. And although I think the GOP smear machine was completely unjustified, it did give Clinton a certain mystique. Unlike most Democrats, he gave as good as he got. And he warned Newt in '95: Knock me down and I'll come back stronger. (paraphrased)
