FEC Stats Highlight Democratic Party Committees’ Fundraising Prowess

The Democratic Party, coming off a successful election cycle in which it took control of both houses of Congress, has parlayed its new majority into a boosted fundraising capacity, while the historically cash-strong Republican Party has lost its money-raising supremacy in the legislative minority.

According to statistics released Tuesday by the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Democratic party committees raised $111.5 million in the first six months of 2007 — an increase of 29 percent over the first half of 2005 and 98 percent over the first half of 2003. Republican party committees raised $108.8 million, a drop of 24 percent from 2005 and a 22 percent decline from 2003.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), which oversaw the party’s gain of 30 House seats in 2006, recorded the largest gains since the last election cycle. Receipts for the DCCC jumped 51 percent over the same period in 2005, coming in at $23.6 million for the first six months of 2007. Each of the three major Republican party organizations — the Republican National Committee (RNC), the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) — raised about one-fourth less in the first half of 2007 than in the first half of 2005.
