Edwards criticizes Bush's threat to veto insurance bill

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - John Edwards was at the Iowa State Fair today, calling on Congress to thwart President Bush if he vetoes a bill to expand funding for a children's health insurance program.

The Democratic presidential hopeful lauded Congress for standing up to Bush's threat of vetoing the bill if it doesn't land within budget.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program provides insurance to more than six million children nationwide. Bush endorses a $5 billion increase to the program, while Congress has proposed between a $35 billion to $50 billion boost.

Edwards says that by considering a veto, Bush is bowing to special interests. He says Congress should oppose the president if he blocks the bill.
