Hillary Clinton: The Oatmeal Raisin Cookie of the Democratic Candidates
http://dailywtf.typepad.com/content/2007/08/hillary-clinton.html">Link to full article

<snip>

Yes, it’s very easy to search the wide, wide world of the Internet and find plenty of people who are ready to latch onto the Hillary bandwagon like John McCain grabbing loose change. But in that quirky and unpredictable realm known as “real life,” where not everyone spends their days reading blogs and coming up with clever ways to bash the opposing party using Caturday pictures, I just don’t see it. I spend a decent chunk of my time up in Boston, where the Democratic Party is second only to the Red Sox, and these are the usual responses I get when Hillary is mentioned:

“She scares my children.”

“There are a lot of Republicans I’d vote for before her. And a few dead people.”

“Listening to her talk about Iraq is like having someone intentionally rupture my spleen.”

“Yeah, he was a really good President. I wish we could vote for him again.”

<snip>

Have you ever been to a Mrs. Fields cookie shop? You know how the tray for oatmeal raisin cookies is always a lot more crowded than the other trays? It’s because nobody actually likes oatmeal raisin cookies. Oh, sure, every once in a while, a few are bought by a passing health nut, or a soccer mom on a diet, or the blind. And occasionally, some poor, innocent child with Cookie Misidentification Syndrome will excitedly reach over the counter, his face beaming with anticipation as he stares at what he believes are chocolate chips nestled into his circular confection – only to gag, and oftentimes vomit, when his mouth closes around his purchase and reveals the brutal truth.

34. It really is pathetic that you can't talk about Hillary without the synchophants bringing up POLLS
Some of us would like to argue about substance....then there are those who just want to talk about polls. Some of us want to make up our own minds, and argue logically. Then, again, others simply want to follow the leader, like those who follow the polls like lemmings. So, what about the polls? Where is the beef?

39. And on that topic...
Recognize that polls are all they have. Hillary HAS no substinance. She is the queen of vague generalities and the corporate money machine.

8. I like oatmeal raisin cookies. Maybe I need to reevaluate my preferences.
Let's face it. Hillary's doing a good job campaigning. She's eroding the negatives. She's not my first choice, but she's probably going to win the nomination, and I'll work hard for her election.

14. I agree with you.
I've been leaning in another direction, but I'm getting more and more comfortable with her. I'll have no trouble supporting her if she's the nominee.

And I don't see why the OP had to dis oatmeal raisin cookies!

Even though I don't like raisins! :)

What I admire most about Hillary is that everyone who hates, fears and/or bashes her is just swimming in her wake. She just keeps on keepin' on.

Well here is something we should care about. She can win the nomination. But can she win the general election?

She is more like a sugar cookie.

7. I absolutely adore Oatmeal-Raisin cookies!
What "brutal truth" are you referring to? Chocolate Chip cookies are good too, but nothing, beats a wonderful and yummy freshly baked oatmeal-raisin cookie.

I guess you just don't like Hillary and could find nothing of merit to discredit her with (other than comparing her to a snack food)?

10. Hey there are many stupid people in the world, so what else is new?
Some children are afraid of their own shadows.

Some dead people actually do vote

Some people don't even know what a spleen is

Some people think the Red Sox are losers even though they have been in first place for most of the
baseball season

Some people don't know their asses from their elbows

Oatmeal raisin cookies are yummy and since when are whiny, snot-filled kids picking a president?

That's the brutal truth baby

18. Maybe it's just Mrs Field's
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies that aren't very popular..my homemade ones are to die for. :)

If she wins then I will have shaken hands with a president of the USA but I don't want her and am not counting the inevitability like so many, this far out.

Go Obama, Go Edwards, Go Kucinich..Go whomever! Work through that well greased machine.

17. Maybe this dude just doesn't like Mrs. Fields!
I can understand that. I was trapped in the San Diego Convention Center a few weeks ago. I wanted real food, but they don't sell real food there. They DID have about fifty Mrs. Fields cookie stands. The greedy bastards who run that center think we're all students on the Hogwarts Express, and can eat junk food all day and not die.

And believe it or not, this does have something to do with the guy who wrote the essay. He seems to think that because a cookie has texture, that it has raisins, that it isn't all grease and sugar and it doesn't dissolve before it hits your colon, that it can't be any good. He seems to think that we, too, are Hogwarts Express riders, and that the only acceptable candidate is one that rots your teeth and gives you diabetes.

Well, we've gotten our swill of treacle from George Bush, fellow. We've also gotten it from the DLC candidates like Clinton. It's time we got some nutrition in our diet. It may be a little harder for us to chew, but that will strengthen our jaws. And it may not have a fancy brand name on it, but it will be better for us in the long run.

Why write all that only to say at the end that Clinton is, in fact, a poor choice? Is your entire argument solely focused on raisins?

23. Multiple issues with the OP
1. It's the internet where Hillary is despised. In the real world (where people are polled), she leads the Dem field by 20+ points.

2. The author admits he/she is limited to his immediate surroundings. No one he knows in BOSTON likes Hillary? Fine. EVERYONE I know in ATLANTA likes Hillary.

3. The manager at the Quickie Mart on the corner just told me Oatmeal Raisin cookies are his biggest selling flavor. Don't believe me? Fine. I don't believe anyone told the nut job in the OP that Hillary scares his children. :eyes:

28. She's the "the more things change, the more they stay the same" candidate...
Status quo all the way. Sure, she's better than BushCo, and she'll bring some good Dems into the cabinet, but we DAMN well better be sure we elected a large majority of Dems to congress or it's not going to mean much in the end.

I don't think Hillary would veto good progressive bills, but she's not going to help get them enacted either, especially if it rocks the boat too much.

That's MY take on it.

That said--I'll vote for her if she's the candidate, but the more I learn about both her and Obama, the more I like Edwards.

31. One of her early controversies involved cookies -- anybody remember?
People had a really hard time getting their heads around a First Lady with -- gasp! -- ambitions! A career! At a law firm!!

She said, "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession which I entered before my husband was in public life."

Then came a backlash claiming she hated women who stayed at home, and what's so BAD about baking cookies, everybody wanted to know?!?

Then she actually had to bake some, and put out a recipe, and then Teresa had to make the pumpkin ones in response to Pickles' chocolate oatmeal ones ... It's absurd. (By the way -- just for the record -- Hillary Clinton's cookies were chocolate chip.)

Felt like she was looking down on those women who do make cookies.

Just one more reason she is loved by Democrats more than by the general public.
