Because the last 10 years have proved that

WE CAN'T HANDLE DE-REGULATION

The lure of the buck is just too great. De-regulated utilities allowed Enron to "game the grid" and "screw Grandma" and have so many laughs while doing it. Amusing if you're making the big bucks - not so amusing if you're paying them.

Ditto with insurance (of any ilk) It's great if you can take the dividends and re-invest them and make scadoodles of dollars that you just then hate so much to pay back to your policy holders- "Wait! You mean I might have pay some back?!! What kind of a rip-off is that???!! We've already distributed those bazookamillions through executive bonuses and stock options. You can't mean that you want us to cover YOUR LOSSES? Are you crazy?"

I would prefer not to die because my toothpaste contained antifreeze

I would prefer that my pets not eat imported petfood and then die of kidney failure- I'm just funny that way.

I would prefer to get treated for my disease without declaring bankruptcy and then dying - I understand some countries actually do this.

1. I want one that stands with WE THE PEOPLE
to rein in PREDATORY POWER.

You know, the way it was supposed to, reserving civil liberties for human beings and regulating institutions, not the other way around.

I especially want one that tells all the sanctimonious busybodies to bugger off, that human beings have the inalienable right to pursue happiness in whatever way they see fit if it doesn't directly harm other people.

4. First you will need to become a Republican...
If you are a Republican, you can pay a 'nanny' to spank you and even change your diapers, all on the taxpayers dime.

That aside, I very much agree with your point. I can just see the Bushites telling China, 'Do whatever you need to do to get us cheap shit, we'll make sure it isn't looked at too closely.' I don't remember this much crap happening during the Clinton years. Lead toys? Toxic veggies? Deadly pet food? Republicans should be banned from America like the Nazi's from Germany.
