Grassroots Reports Expose Wrongheaded Conservative Ideas

Have you checked out our new Grassroots Report feature? That’s where you’ll find fresh voices from the grassroots whose insights and perspectives deepen our coverage of issues that matter to working people and their union.

In the latest reports, Anastasia Ordonez and Jeff Crosby both take a look at what’s wrong with the way conservative politicians view the world.

Ordonez, the communications director for the California Labor Federation, takes on the annual state budget process in the Golden State. She says all the back and forth between the sides over how money will be spent must be “a taste of what it must feel like to be seated in the front row at Wimbledon.”

While working people in the Golden State (and throughout the country) grapple with serious problems, such as the lack of health insurance and attacks on the freedom to form a union, conservative lawmakers are busy trying to turn back the clock. For example, California’s newly appointed labor commissioner is holding public forums on issues relating to state regulations that give working people the right to take lunch breaks during the workday.

Ordonez says working families need legislators who will focus on the needs of workers and their families. But these battles over already-won benefits make her wonder if our elected officials, including the presidential candidates seeking our support,

really will stand up for working people and start giving back some of the ground we’ve lost. Or if we’re going to face continued take-aways and more disappointment after the polls close and the last phone (bank) calls are made.
