Kucinich speaks from experience on homelessness

"Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich remembers well those who helped his struggling family while he was growing up, including a nun who rescued him from a particularly hideous pair of pants...

If people want to know what kind of president I'll be, they only have to know my background to know who I'm in government to represent: those who aspire to decent jobs, a decent wage, health care, a roof over their heads, education for their children," he said Wednesday after speaking with families involved in a program that provides transitional housing and support to the homeless.

"I come to the political system as an advocate for people, not an advocate for any special interest group. That really is what distinguishes me from anyone else in this race," Kucinich said...

"Every step along the way, there was someone who offered the roof over our heads, clothing, or financial help," said Kucinich. "Any family who's ever been through that knows you don't make it through life alone."

Saying government should play a strong role in helping people meet their basic needs, Kucinich touted his plans for a single-payer, not-for-profit health care system and universal, full-day preschool. He said he supports increasing the minimum wage to at least $10 an hour and would put millions of people to work rebuilding the nation's infrastructure."

1. I do like this man, I do
He is a straight talker and he cares about people, these are not just "talking points" carefully warmed up
by paid consultants but commitments by him on policy issues. I don't think he would ask a political
consultant whether he should vote for a war or not based on how it would impact on his electability.

5. Yes, that goes along with longer term planning and what is best
for others. Not just myself and not just for today.

"It was a time for memories and vindication, if not nostalgia, recalling the day 20 years ago that then-Mayor Dennis Kucinich refused to sell Muny Light, sending the city into default.

Kucinich, now the U.S. representative for the 10th District, consisting of the West Side of Cleveland and parts of the western suburbs, was honored Monday with a City Council resolution, thanking him for not selling the Cleveland Public Power plant. The plant, still expanding throughout the city, has since saved Clevelanders more than $300 million in payments, officials said...

On Dec. 15, 1978, with the city's bond rating in shambles, Kucinich refused demands to sell the light plant to help pay the city's debts. The Cleveland Trust Co. and five other banks refused to roll over $15 million in notes, and Cleveland became the first major American city since the Depression to slide into default.

Kucinich would lose his re-election bid the following year, and it would be 15 years before he again won elected office...

"I'm honored to receive this," Kucinich said, not only in his own behalf, but also for the light plant employees, the plant's now nearly 86,000 customers, and others who helped in the fight."

2. This is why I like him, and why I'm voting for him...
He really gets what the government is for...

of, by and for the people...

No talking points

No focus groups

No fingers in the air to see which way the wind is blowing today...

Just his own very good ideas and observations...

No bullshit...

4. The truth will prevail.
If you tell the truth, you will never have to remember what was said to a particular group.

You tell it the way it is, not according to how much the group being talked to will give in campaign donations.

People respect an honest man, that's why Jimmy Carter is so well thought of and trusted around the World.

3. Under the Bush regime many of us have the potential to become
homeless in these hard economic times. We would do well to have a president that understands the hardships of being poor, jobless and without health care. Dennis is a man for the people.

Go, Dennis!

8. Economic times will only get worse for the middle class unless
we take a totally different approach. I believe he is the only person who really understands that we need to look at people of other countries as people.

The other candidates have not shown ANY compassion to the union workers in Iraq who have protested the privatization of their oil. Instead they have voted or endorsed the supplemental bill with the Iraq Oil Law benchmark.
