Kucinich says he's the one

Dennis Kucinich likened himself to both FDR and Seabiscuit -- Franklin D. Roosevelt in proposing a 21st century New Deal and the legendary race horse in claiming that he'll come from way behind and win the Democratic nomination.

In an appearance this morning before the Globe editorial board, the Ohio congressman said as president he would create a new version of the 1930s Works Progress Administration to put Americans to work to fix the nation's crumbling infrastructure and to build a more environmentally friendly energy system.

KITTERY, Maine — Congressman and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said to make America a better country, it must be rebuilt, and that not only involves strengthening the economy and providing more jobs for Americans, but finding strength through peace.

With talk of the Bush administration setting the stage for war in Iran, Kucinich said the president may be deceiving Americans and creating an unnecessary police state in the United States.

On Thursday, Kucinich appeared at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to tour the yard and talk with fellow supporters about his policies on rebuilding America, which he said will strengthen the U.S. economy and provide jobs for Americans.

Kucinich later spoke in Dover.

Kucinich said his first act, if elected president, would be to withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization.

"We need to rebuild America and restore it to its state before NAFTA and the WTO," said Kucinich. "On behalf of American workers, I will fight to reopen factories and bring manufacturing back to the U.S. to create jobs."

Kucinich said he also plans to help rebuild America by putting more funds into infrastructure.

"There are trillions of infrastructure needs," said Kucinich, and by using funds to rebuild schools, roads and bridges, for starters, Kucinich said, Americans will have ample job opportunities to make good wages.

"Workers are entitled to a president they can call their own," said Kucinich. "Everyone wants a president that stands by their word."

In Dover, Kucinich said that the White House is "turning military assets against our own citizens" as it sets the stage for war by using spy satellites and aircraft sensors to expand domestic surveillance, which has largely been restricted to foreign surveillance in the past.

Kucinich also responded to the report that the Bush administration is planning to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. Kucinich said this move is attempting to deceive Americans into yet another war and "will set the stage for more chaos in the region because it undercuts all of our diplomatic efforts."

Kucinich blasts Bush administration on domestic spying and Iran

August 17th, 2007 by Jason Easley

Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich took the Bush administration to task yesterday for their decision to use U.S. spy satellites for domestic surveillance. Kucinich also accused the administration of laying the groundwork for a war with Iran. “Not only are they ramping up their attempts to lie and deceive this nation into another war, they are also using those lies and deceptions to justify creating a police state right here where everyone is under suspicion and everyone is secretly under surveillance from Big Brother in the sky,” Kucinich said.

Take a closer look: Kucinich is the true voice of the people

The word “democrat” comes from the Greek “demos,” meaning “people.” So the Democratic Party should be the people’s party, as opposed to the parties that favor the elite.

But how many Democrats in Congress or running for president can say that they favor the people rather than special interests?

Other Democrats

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, through her inaction on impeachment and her allowing increased administration spying on us, has shown that she is not protecting the people.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, in sharing a podium with Rupert Murdoch and raking in huge sums of corporate financing, has shown that she is not favoring the people.

Sen. Barack Obama, in changing his mind when corporate interests threaten him about engaging in dialogue with other countries, is really not speaking for the people.

John Edwards, who suggests that debates be limited to “major” presidential candidates, is not standing up for the people.

The only Democrat running for president who has consistently spoken for the people has been Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Where he stands

Here are some of the ways that Kucinich has done this:

(1) co-sponsoring with Rep. John Conyers HR 676, a universal health plan;

(2) voting against the Patriot Act;

(3) voting against invading Iraq;

(4) promising to withdraw from the World Trade Organization and NAFTA, (4) standing opposed to weapons in space;

(5) voting against a flag-burning amendment;,

(6) advocating a 12-point plan to get our troops safely out of Iraq;

(7) voting to cut off funds for prosecuting the Iraq war;

(8) urging the signing of the Kyoto Protocols to cut down on pollution;

(9) advocating education for all, from kindergarten through college;

(10) urging the creation of a Department of Peace,

(11) ending the phony “war on drugs”;

(12) urging renewal of the environment;

(13) sponsoring HR 333 to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney; and

(14) abolishing the death penalty.

All of these positions favor the people over the wealthy and well-connected.

All the other presidential candidates are Democrats in name only.

Ralph Nader called Kucinich “a genuine progressive.”

The corporate punditry with its big media would prefer our remaining content with ersatz progressives. That way they can continue to run the country from the top down, and the people will be none the wiser.

We decide who’s electable

A common refrain among those who agree with Kucinich’s positions but refuse to support his candidacy is that he is “unelectable.”

The last time I checked, however, a person who garners the most votes gets elected. So the antidote to the unelectablility argument is to vote for him.

Though the odds be long, one might do well to remember the words of President Abraham Lincoln: “The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.”

Domestic Spying is Orwellian (Rep. Dennis Kucinich)

August 17th, 2007

This new domestic spying program is against everything this country stands on. The Bush Administration’s constant disdain for the Constitution has actively and systematically violated the civil liberties of American citizens and this policy must be reversed.

The Administration has once again acted to violate our civil liberties and our trust by allowing domestic law enforcement agencies the ability to spy on American citizens using the intelligence capabilities previously reserved for our foreign intelligence objectives. Big Brother will now employ its most invasive and powerful intelligence tools directly upon American citizens.

The new domestic spying program is just another way the Administration continues to ignore the Constitution. The USA PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act, expansion of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib have all resulted in attacks on civil liberties.

This Orwellian policy is yet another example of the Administration’s continued desire to deliberately eliminate the Constitutionally-derived civil liberty rights from American citizens.

The Administration continues to dodge the Congress, the Courts and the American public to avoid any form of accountability. The Administration needs to be held accountable for its full frontal assault on the Bill of Rights and our Constitution.
