Democratic Self-Appreciation Thread #5: President Hillary Clinton will be remembered for...
Let's now assume Hillary Clinton wins the nomination and the presidency. After 4 or 8 years in the WH, what do you think will be the most positive aspect of her presidency that will be remembered?

I say a strong economy- I see President Clinton bringing some fiscal sanity and economic progress to our nation.

18. Better try to get rid of term limits now, then.
Clinton already said she'd keep the troops in Iraq through both of her terms.

27. Well she has said it a couple of times,
Edited on Sat Aug-18-07 06:47 PM by JTFrog
although she always tries to backtrack and say that she really means to end the war and isn't for permanent occupation. 10 years isn't permanent I guess, but wouldn't it cover two terms?

http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/23557

I've previously posted an msnbc link where she said she plans on keeping troops there for at least a decade. Asked how many troops would be left behind under her plan Clinton demurs, claiming that she would bow to “the advice of military officers.” Undoubtedly, however, these open-ended missions—securing Iraq’s borders, suppressing resistance, training its military and, above all, assuring control of its oil, not to mention protecting and supporting all those engaged in these activities—would require the permanent basing of tens of thousands of US soldiers and marines in an occupation that would last for decades.

32. Yes, I've seen that - it's based on hearsay from an unnamed source
it's not something she's said publicly, or that's been heard from more than one source, so I absolutely wouldn't believe that it's part of her plan unless I heard it from Hillary herself.

37. Well, from her own
website:

Hillary opposes permanent bases in Iraq. She believes we may need a vastly reduced residual force to train Iraqi troops, provide logistical support, and conduct counterterrorism operations. But that is not a permanent force, and she has been clear that she does not plan a permanent occupation.

Again, she may say she's against permanent bases, but these missions would require tens of thousands of US soldiers and marines and would last for decades. I guess that just leaves the word "permanent" up for interpretation.

3. interesting experiment
I say she's remembered for bringing sanity and rational thought back to the White House and the US Government, for ending torture and rendition, for beginning the process of rebuilding our reputation back in the eyes of the World and for ending the financial bleeding our country has barely endured under the Republicans.

I also think she'll be remembered for being attacked more viciously than any other President. Some people just will never accept her winning (is she is the nominee and wins in the general election).

After 8 years of crony capitalism Hillary will return merit to government. A FEMA which actually works, an Attorney General who will be the best lawyer in the country not some religious nut or incompetent hack.

38. They are called Democratic Self-Appreciation Threads
and they focus on our presidential candidates. They give a chance for all of us to show some appreciation to those that we like and to those we might not like but might wind up elected.

And, by the way, as an Obama supporter, I have no intention of posting anything on Hillary's forum.

21. Hopefully, Stevens, Ginsburg, Kennedy and Souter
will all resign the moment she's inaugurated, giving her four vacancies to fill, which she will promptly do with four very liberal 40 year olds.

Those 4 plus Breyer (he's still young enough, let him stay) will restore sanity to the court.

26. "fiscal sanity and economic progress to our nation."
Deregulation of the financial industry and media consolidation weren't exactly the sorts of things that the first Clinton administration should be proud of.

Much of what is coming to pass began with the sell out Dems of the 1990's.

35. Universal Health Care...
I know, not good enough for some, but she definitely has challenged herself personally to find a way to make it happen. I believe she will and it will be the much vaunted historical moment of her presidency. Bringing the troops home is also another one of her priorities, not meaning to diminish the importance of accomplishing the task by placing it second. I think bringing the troops home is on the top of her list.

47. She'll be a great fiscal manager
One thing that Hillary has addressed that other top tier candidates haven't adequately addressed is the need to balance the budget and improve the efficiency of government. The Clinton/Gore reinventing government initiative did something that few executive branches has accomplished. They reduced the size of government and reduced bureaucratic inefficiencies. Hillary will restart that program which will be a relief after the mismanagement of the "MBA" president. This will lead to lower deficits and more money available for needed programs like universal health care.
