I Did The Unthinkable Tonight - Started Looking At Jobs In Canada
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 10:07 PM by MannyGoldstein
Man, I don't want to move. I like my bluest of blue states (Massachusetts) and the many, many friends we have here. And my kid is in a public school that leaves most private schools in the dust.

But watching the Failure Fuhrer speechifyin' on the tube about faux history this morning was very, very disturbing. The enormity of it all hit me square in the gut - Bush's sodomizing of our Constitution and his insane war, the triangulating assent to his actions by the Congressional "Democrats", the stupidity of We The People in continuing to elect these scoundrels, the FUBAR health care system, the 27-year war on the Middle Class by the Predator Class, ... and so forth.

Sigh.

South and North and even Yurp all look like favorable destinations.

2. I totally understand.
Watching Ari Fleischer tonight on Hardball talking about the ads his pro-war group is running, made me realize that this war is soooo important to so many people in power...and they aren't going to just roll over and let someone into the white house who might end it.
Ari and his ilk don't care about freedom for Iraqis or stamping out terrorism...it's only about how much they can profit from this war. They aren't going away...and it scares the shit out of me.

5. Don't blame you, I've thought about it myself.
Nothing in America is real anymore, everything is fabricated and packaged to look different then it actually is; only salvation is the phony scam is unsustainable. But then what?

6. 2006 was a 30-year high of people moving to Canada
http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3433005

I'd move to British Columbia in a second. It takes about 9 hours to drive to Toronto...I did a test run when I moved to Madison...

17. You need an income of $1250 a month for a single person
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 07:13 AM by WesDem
You have to document this income with 3-6 months of bank statements. Other than that it's mainly ID stuff. Keep in mind that different states may have slightly different requirements, but if you have the income, it's easy. Planning to live in Mexico and work is problematic, although some people manage to do it, and the requirements are more complicated. Canada's income requirement is much steeper, as I understand it.

11. Don't let the snarky types get you down, MG
I had three opportunities to expatriate when I was younger, and I didn't take them, for what seemed like good reasons at the time, but which in retrospect were trivial.

Now I wish I had taken one of them. At my age, the only way I could emigrate would be as the spouse of a foreign national.

If you think that you need to become an expatriate, don't let anyone tell you know. You know what's best for you.

14. My parents dragged me kicking and screaming to another country when I was 16
Turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. It's great to be somewhere else; you never stop learning and the whole American noise machine just goes on mute. Plus, you can (and will) always come back here. Highly recommend it for anyone who can pull it off.

16. Just go then
Enough of these "one of these days I'm going to . . ." threads. Just freaking go and let us all know how it is up there. Talk is cheap. Action speaks louder than words. I would give 10-1 odds that you never get past the point of threatening to move. So until you got the U-haul truck loaded up in your driveway, spare us all the drama of your pseudo-angst.

Me, I love living in America. I've got a good job, a great family, and I live in a nice wooded cul-de-sac in the suburbs. Why I would allow some doofus in the white house (who is going to be gone in a little while) make me pack up my entire family, change careers, and move to a foreign country is beyond me. You really think things are that evil now? What specifically has happened to you that you feel like Canada is the better choice?

One thing I learned years ago is that most problems start on the inside. In other words, if you're unhappy about your current whereabouts, it's probably something going on with you. And whatever that thing is will follow you to your next destination. A change of scenery does not fix what ails you.

Stay here and work for change. Or pack up and move. Whatever. Just pick one and DO IT instead of blabbing on here about what you MIGHT do.
