Deep in the heart of equine country, a governor battling to retain his seat has launched a TV campaign ad pegging Aurora as a show horse of the evils wrought by a casino.
"It's a story without a happy ending," Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher says in the ad, which started airing Tuesday and can also be viewed online on the governor's campaign Web site.
Moving across viewers' screens in this first of a series of campaign ads airing the next 10 weeks are images of Hollywood Casino in Aurora. On a bright, sunny day, viewers see the telltale facade. And a yellow, diamond-shaped "Stop ahead" traffic sign, with an image of part of the casino in the backdrop. The ad doesn't mention Aurora, but it certainly is the local landmark.
"The (governor) of Kentucky came up here all sweet and nice. The mayor met with him, three to five minutes as a courtesy," Carie Anne Ergo, the city's public information officer, said Wednesday evening. "He never hinted he was gonna blast our city. I suppose that's politics."
