Polling data shows Hillary Clinton is most Democrat's 1st choice & many like her as their 2nd choice
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 11:25 AM by rinsd
In the most recent Cook Political Report (taken Aug)

1st choice went as follows:

Hillary - 39%
Obama - 21%
Gore - 10%
Edwards - 8%
Richardson - 4%
Everyone else at 1% or less.

When 1st & 2nd choices are combined

Hillary - 63%
Obama - 41%
Gore - 24%
Edwards - 22%
Richardson - 7%
Biden - 4%
Kucinich - 2%
Everyone else at 1% or less.

See page 22-25 on these crosstabs - http://cookpolitical.com/races/report_pdfs/2007%20poll_crtab_aug2.pdf

This trend is also reflected in Cook's average of all its polls taken this primary season

1st # is 1st choice, 2nd # is 2nd choice

Hillary Rodham Clinton - 33 53
Barack Obama - 22 40
John Edwards - 12 26
Al Gore - 10 25
Joe Biden - 1 4
Bill Richardson - 3
Chris Dodd - 1
Dennis Kucinich - 1
Mike Gravel - - 1
(VOL) Other -2 2
Not sure - 15 23

See page 4 - http://cookpolitical.com/races/report_pdfs/2007%20poll_tpline_aug2.pdf

Here's a link to Cook's reports - http://cookpolitical.com/poll/default.php

Gallup shows a similar trend when they remove Gore from polling(her numbers rise at a similar rate as other candidates and do head to head matchups with Obama & Hillary

I'm not saying Hillary is most people's 2nd choice.

Just that the assertion that Hillary will gain zero support if other candidates should have to drop out is absurd.

1. You mean "most Democrats' choice", of course.
Republicans are people, too -- well, sorta-kinda -- and they have their own favourites. Now, if you could just get everybody except Democrats to stay away from the polls in the next election, these data would actually mean something.

3. But, but...nobody I know likes her!
The polls must be fixed.

:sarcasm:

/sarcasm off

Interesting that her lead is pretty consistent between the first-choice and top-two-choices polling.

I think most Dems will vote for her if she's the nominee, contrary to the claims of many around here. The alternatives - voting for Rudy or Mitt or staying home - are not options.

is someone other than Hillary.

6. Yes but that does not mean that 61% will not vote for Hillary.
All it means is that currently the other 7 candidates in the field have garnered their own support.

7. Numbers from current and likely primary voters are meaningless
The grassroots turnout against a threatened Clinton nomination will be enormous. People are sick of ineffective, corrupt, rethug-lite corporatists, and disaffected progressives will come out in droves to defeat her.

"The grassroots turnout against a threatened Clinton nomination will be enormous. People are sick of ineffective, corrupt, rethug-lite corporatists, and disaffected progressives will come out in droves to defeat her."

That must be why Kucinich is kicking ass in the polls. Oh wait...

10. Yes it will.
Especially the ones about no one likes Hillary or how the progressives are gonna swamp the polls in an anti-Hillary tidal wave.

alienate people who should be her natural allies. Funny, I always she was too smart to have people like you sticking up for her. Maybe she isn't.

28. Man, I just want a Dem in the whitehouse
and the Dems with a majority in each house. Judges are my issue. I remember when people said she couldn't win her senate race and were proven very wrong. But all these bashing threads (for all the nominees, but esp Hillary) are tiresome. Why do the pukes work for them?

29. So do I
Which is why I can't support Hillary. It's patently obvious that Rove is drooling at the prospect of running against her, and he's not doing that for no reason. And even if she does win the presidency, I've yet to hear one way that she's committed to supporting the true ideals of the Democratic party.

And no, promising to win the "New War" and handing out "Cold War Medals" is not a Democratic principle in my book.

33. She's not my favorite, that's for sure
Although both my parents and my twin sister love her. I will vote for her in the general if she's the candidate. And I think she'll beat the pants off Rudy. You haven't even begun to hear about him yet. Many people are holding their fire on him until he's the nominee. Take it from a New Yorker - he'll be crying like a baby no matter who our nominee is.

Though I think any of the big 3 are quite capable of beating any of the Republicans.
