Most Southern Maryland politicos have stayed out of the 2008 presidential race, but the head of Charles County's Democratic Party has entered the fray by throwing her support behind Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), a leading contender for her party's nomination.
Virginia L. Benedict, chairman of the county's Democratic Central Committee, said Tuesday that she will serve as Charles coordinator for Clinton's campaign. Benedict will help generate grass-roots support for Clinton in advance of Maryland's primary election, scheduled for Feb. 12.
Benedict will work with Gov. Martin O'Malley (D), who in May became the second governor to endorse Clinton and was named the campaign's state chairman.
Benedict said her work on Clinton's behalf should not be interpreted as a sign that Charles's Democratic Party organization has embraced Clinton.
