FL news site posts Dean WI loss already! I verified it by phone. Outrage!
I found this on the Dean blog. I called the number given, hoping to find it was a mistake. The man who answered was very upfront....they got it from the AP....it has been sent out already!
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I called the station running the story:

Dean's Campaign Hit with Another Blow after Wisconsin Loss
Last Update: 2/17/2004 8:42:42 AM

(what the h***?! How can they post this?! The election hasn't even taken
place?!)
http://www.wtev.com/news/national/story.aspx?content_id=9C9CAB2C-2942-4006-A0C5-D62EE65FA524

here's their number: News Hotline
(904)564-1599

They said they will change it, but it wouldn't hurt for them to hear from
some other people.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I hope you do not think this is ok. I don't!

7. He said they were hurrying to pull it.
I called the Dean campaign, and I told them where it was posted. Whether they can do anything at all about the AP lies remains to be seen.

I would hope not one person on this forum today will defend this.

I believe their email is info@ap.org

Anyone got a better one?

5. This is absolutely ridiculous, and I'm outraged!
These media whores are so eager to snatch the scoop that they are throwing off the entire process.

I guess on the plus side, if I were trying to decide if I "had time" to vote tonight, and I were supporting Dean, that would sure make me get my butt to the polls to prove them wrong. On the flip side, if I were supporting the leader, it might make it a bit less urgent for me to get to the polls. Just some thoughts to encourage you. I wish for the best for Dean and his supporters.

Dean Insists Run Won't End in Wisconsin

By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer

MILWAUKEE - Democratic front-runner John Kerry (news - web sites) looked to Wisconsin on Tuesday for a victory to snuff out the struggling campaign of Howard Dean (news - web sites), who denied his organization was in turmoil and that a loss would end his bid for the nomination.

I am not going to argue about this. You are totally missing the point of the thread. The media put up a false headline, and they don't even understand what they did wrong.

That should scare you. Kerry, Dean, whoever. I can not help what the staffer thought. I did not bring it up. He said it, I did not.

Now I will scurry back to the warmth and comfort of the blog.

They said they had put it up by mistake and they were pulling it. At least they were honest. They said it was from an AP story, and they put it up before verifying. I don't think the guy knew what a primary was or ever heard of WI. Nor did he care especially.

I called, and I verified.

Is it beyond reason to assume that a Dean blogger might exaggerate the content of an article? And why isn't the content pasted into his or her post?

I wasn't saying that you're perpertrating a hoax. I'm saying that the Dean blogger might be exaggerating the article. What exactly did you confirm when you called the AP reporter?

And what was his or her name? I wouldn't mind calling to confirm it.

87. By the way, this is my understanding of citing blogs:
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 02:59 PM by AP
"We believe that blogs (including DU) are not by nature reliable sources of information. Anyone could post just about anything on a blog (and they routinely do) and then come to DU and use a blog message as "proof" of one thing or another. The problem with trying to moderate this stuff is that we have to make highly subjective judgement calls like this one."

-Skinner

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=120&topic_id=12631

That was the only thing I was trying to address. Even if you called to verify, up to post 19, there was no indication of what you verified. Even if there was a headline, I still think it's important to read the article. I have a strong suspicion that the article itself was not all that inflamatory, and might have cast light on the choice of headlines. That's why, I believe, the blogger didn't paste any of the article's content to the Dean blog and I was trying to bring people's attention to that fact -- and therefore, might have been exaggerating the implications.

Furthermore, no DU'er even saw the article, which I thought was important to note.

This isn't about you. It's about the reliability of claims made by candidate advocates on candidate blogs.

I suspect that the story has been written and these two sites made mistakes by putting it up so early.

But I MUST say that the melodrama of the first line is nothing short of laughable.

28. That was not good. People like to believe that their votes count

And that belief sells ads, which pay reporters' salaries.

This looks like a disgruntled employee kind of thing.

They'll be wrong, but they'll still believe it.

50. No, I am either for Kerry or Edwards....but
What facts do I have wrong?

Show me a poll where he leads in WI...or anywhere.

Did his campaign manager quit, or was he fired? Either way, he's gone...over to Kerry, for goodness sake.

Didn't he have $40 million plus just last month? What does he have in the coffers now? He's broke.

Sorry, I think Dean has brought a lot to the race, but it's obvious to almost everyone but die-hard Dean supporters that it's over. He fought a valiant fight, but he has lost.

At least with Edwards, he has a better shot in the South of gaining momentum and challenging Kerry. Not much, but it is possible. I don't see where Dean can reverse the momentum shift.

47. All citizens should be outraged by this
regardless of party affiliation. It seems fair elections in this country have been strangled. What will we get in November, I shudder to think. Is what's left of democracy gone now also? Dean said on Hardball that he would seek to break the hold of corporate media and now can you see why this needs to be done. Corporate media has shown they are not to be held accountable to anyone.

You know the answer to that. They care deeply, but for the
corporate profits and *NOT* for journalistic integrety or
the ultimate fate of our country.

One person above suggested I might not have checked it out. The guy I talked to said they were taking it down, it was from AP, and he did not know when the WI primary was. I am not sure he even knew what I was talking about.

This is very sad and very scary.

****************ROUND UP OF THE CBS-47 / DEAN LOSES WI STORY:

I called the CBS-47 Florida channel that had the headline on their site this AM that said Dean lost the WI primary. They said that they get their national news feed directly from CBS national, and I should call them to lodge my complaint.

I called CBS and got Mike Sims on the line, the director of all the content on CBS.com. He said that CBS doesn't have any relationship with CBS-47 in FL and that the story would not have come from CBS national.

So, I three-way called James, at CBS-47 in FL, with myself and Mike, and it came out that the story was originally issued by Knight Ridder Tribune wire service. James spoke to a woman there this AM, Theresa, who told him that they were having trouble finding the source / author of the article. James is still trying to track this down and follow up on it.

I called Knight Ridder Tribune. Janie at Knight Ridder says their general manager is already on the track of this story but they still have not been able to track down where it came from or who wrote it.

I sent her the URL with the screenshots – thank you, blog people!

Janie promises to follow up with her manager (who is supposedly already on the case). Here is their number - 202-383-6095, press "4" and then "4" again, ask for Janie. I suggest we call TOMORROW to follow up. Janie is very sweet and nice, so be nice and just encourage!

71. This is so wrong and outrageous, but we knew they were doing something...
I posted this yesterday, which explains why it is happening. Just one of the reasons they are taking Dean down. We must stop them. We did not march in the streets when the 2000 election was stolen, but we must now start to protest out where it will be seen. Peaceful protest marches! Also, send all you have to those few reporters who still have a backbone and to all foreign news services. And e-mail to your address book. I still believe that most Americans would be outraged about this!

The reason we need to get the media out of the control of those six owners!

A popular government, without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy; or, perhaps, both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own governors, must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives. James Madison

Subject: RE: Yellow journalism - Game-playing by the media

Dear Ms. Fink,

Thank you for your note regarding the story posted on our website regarding the Dean campaign. The national content on our website is generated from the Associated Press. We do not write the national stories.

After seeing the article, we immediately took steps to have the story corrected.

We do not practice biased journalism at WTEV CBS47 and we are very concerned that this was able to make it onto our website. We plan to investigate further.

Sincerely,

Jim LaBranche

84. This is my towns television station
They never get anything right and the county has a functional illiteracy rate of 59 percent.

I had to double check when they claimed that Clark dropped out of the race five miunustes after I head his wife proclaiming him the next president of the United States on C-SPAN. They were correct on that one though.

This area is also 67 percent Republican, and is the county in which 37,500 democratic votes disappeared from the vote count in 2000 (from primarily black and poor white districts, and districts that were largely democratic in profile)
