Qauke radio in San Francisco changing it's format Monday
Edited on Fri Aug-24-07 10:04 PM by WileEcoyote
Don't know exactly what to expect of 960 AM.

Currently Mike Malloy of Nova M has suggested or at least implied that these will be big changes to the Liberal format. My guess would be that he'll get cut but Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz will stay. Who knows?

Corporate ownership has it's privileges in this ruthless industry. I'm a little concerned. While everyone loves Stephanie Miller some folks think that Malloy goes over the edge. i just say he speaks his mind.

Malloy remarked with a hostile comment about the Chinese earlier this week. It was in reference to the cut throat capitalists over their poisoning our pets and counterfeiting Johnson & Johnson Diabetes test strips. It's a worthwhile complaint but the reference could have been construed as racist. OK it WAS racist sounding. While I don't think that Mike Malloy is a racist himself sometimes his choice of words will offend.

Hell I refer to all diehard republicans as being mentally ill. Guess that makes me a republiphobe.

Anyway I'm already dreading Monday when KQKE 960 goes through it's new cycle.

Sometimes a change is good though. When Willie Brown and Will Durst ran a morning show on 960 AM it was canceled last November. However the Stephanie Miller replacement was much better. Ya gotta love Steph. And besides Willie Brown while very informative and intelligent really was a corrupt mayor. And Will Durst is washed up on the comedy circuit.

Sorry Will & Willie. You had your chance but fucked it up.

Now we're hearing John Scott announce the coming changes. "Changes can be good". OK he hosts the "Progressive News Hour" at 5 to 6 om weekdays. Definately a Liberal but a little more middle of the road than some. All fine and dandy for me. There IS a need for constructive criticism of Liberals. Not from Rush Limbaugh though. He's got nothing to say. What I'm concerned about this station turning into another milk toast middle of the road station.

I await Monday with both hope and concern...

3. KPFA 94.1 in Berkeley
Frankly, I can understand why folks in the rest of the country rely on AAR. But in the Bay Area? Nothing beats KPFA. No commercials. No corporate underwriting. A $25 donation (or 6 hours of volunteer work, I believe) makes you a voting member.

4. Call me a Blue Dawg (which i'm not)
But I never really liked KPFA.

Last time I listened to it regularly it was a 24/7 bash Israel and South Africa format. OK I've got problems with Israel too. Not big ones but some issues.

Then KPFA would play some West African tribal songs for three hours and expect to keep my ear. Sorry no.

Emmy Lou Harris, Johnny Cash or Pete Seager? Yes. Even Bob Dylan Joan Baez or Lou Rawls.

But don't run three friggin hours of music I can't understand played on primitive instruments and expect much market share. Ain't gonna happen.

5. Fair enough. Welcome to the Clear Channel world then.
Have you listened to "Democracy Now" (6 a.m. and 9 a.m.), "The Morning Show" (7 a.m. - 9 a.m.), Against the Grain (Monday-Wednesday at noon), Free Speech Radio News (3:30 p.m.) or the KPFA Evening News (6 p.m.) lately? (For non Bay Area residents, you can listen at KPFA online.

I want to hear news and information that deals with topics in depth, that isn't constantly interrupted by commercials, and that doesn't kowtow to large multinationals or foundations. I humbly suggest that you give KPFA another chance.

In the Bay Area, I have to say that AAR is a distant third choice behind Pacifica (KPFA) and NPR (KQED or KALW).

Perhaps I'll give it a try.

Meanwhile I love listening to Stephanie Miller in the morning. Even if she, Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz and Randi Rhodes have to sell "Sleeptrain Mattresses" and "ITT Gold". It's just one of those things you gotta do in the marketplace.

Whatever changes 960 am makes I hope they stay solvent. Or make money. It's been a good station that I've relied upon.

11. Thank you!
I will sleep better this weekend. I always enjoyed Randi Rhodes. When Quake put her in the evening time slot i missed her. Plus it's really cool when she and Stephanie talk dirty. Steph accuses Rhodes of being well endowed in the boob department.

Fine with me...

However i hate it when I misspell a title like "Quake". darn it! And I usually check my spelling too.

Time to go eat a popsicle and celebrate that Quake didn't scuttle the whole ship.

10. sorry for your loss. Tonight Malloy was discussing
the plight of any liberal talk in the corporate media. We often believe that if there is a market for it, it will succeed. But this is not true anymore. The corporatists want to control ALL media and the message regardless of how much it costs. And with help of the government corporatists and the FCC and the loss of the fairness doctrine, it looks like they are succeeding.

Regardless of how much I read DU and listen to AAR and other liberal media, Malloy has a visceral intuitive take on events that I can't find anywhere else. He is truly a treasure even though I may disagree on some of his stances.

13. There is no format change, only a reimaging
I got this from the people at the station themselves.

I wrote two articles about the changes:

http://ltradio.blogspot.com/2007/08/quake-goes-green.html
http://ltradio.blogspot.com/2007/08/greening-of-quake-part-2.html

They're just expanding some local programming, and giving the imaging of the station a 'green' slant. Nothing really crazy.

Actually, it sounds like the station management is pretty happy with it.
