Bush: Iraqis Working to Secure Country
By BEN FELLER
The Associated Press

CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush said Saturday that Iraqis are sacrificing dearly to secure their country, trying to underscore that the U.S. is not bearing the toll alone.

"Here at home, it can be easy to overlook the bravery shown by Iraqi troops and Iraqi civilians who are in the fight for freedom," Bush said in a radio address taped at his ranch in central Texas. "But our troops on the ground see it every day."

<<snip>>

Former Democratic Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, who lost both legs and an arm while serving in Vietnam, said Bush is ignoring the facts to again try to sell the Iraq war.

Despite enormous sacrifice by Americans, Cleland said in his party's radio address, "We find ourselves mired in a civil war with no end in sight and Iraqis unable or unwilling to make the political decisions necessary to end this conflict."

<<snip>>

Bush: "We cannot expect the new strategy we are carrying out to bring success overnight," he said in another plea for patience from the nation. "But by standing with the Iraqi people as they build their democracy, we will deliver a devastating blow to al-Qaida, we will help provide new hope for millions of people throughout the Middle East, we will gain a friend and ally in the war on terror, and we will make the American people safer."

2. "...Iraqi civilians who are in the fight for freedom."
Does that mean the same as, "Iraqi civiliams who are in the line of fire?"

Just askin'!

We'll never know the real numbers, but I would guess our losses don't even come close to their losses. Anything over zero is too many, but their numbers have got to be horrendous.

4. their numbers are over a million.
They are dying at the rate of 10,000 a MONTH. Yeah, that's the way to make sure the country never recovers. Bomb the hospitals, encourage sectarian strife, bomb the water and electric facilities, pollute the ground and build an army base on the ruins of babylon. Way to destroy a country and its history.

:grr:

3. Why blame the Iraqis?
the US is the one who removed a man who kept the whole thing together, the only secular dictator in the middle east.

This mess is simply and solely because of US imperialism in a place where there was no reason to invade except hubris. Afghanistan is in a worse mess, but that population has been entirely written off, and the continued bombings there are killing allied soldiers and civilians.....and livestock.

The right thing to do would be to get out and rebuild from outside, after the mess is settled by diplomacy.

5. Not sure I agree
I think it's more likely that we're seeing a deeply pathological liar with a profound belief in the stupidity of the American public.

7. Today they are a citizen's group; tomorrow they're tererwrist insurgents...
"A citizens group," Bush said, "tipped off police about the location of an al-Qaida cell believed responsible for the attack, which lead to arrests."

9. I hope it is a long time before we are called the
insurgents in our own country as most of the average Iraqis' have been.

Fighting to defend your country from invaders/occupiers used to be considered noble, just not anywhere * decides to "liberate" though.

I am so sick of their word games. :puke:

10. So am I...
we are already considered traitors and unpatriotic, insurgents could be the next step to try to shut us up.

along with some other truly foul names by some drunk that didn't like my yard sign. He pulled into my drive-way and just let loose, screaming and frothing at the mouth.

Why do pukes froth at the mouth so much? Are they all rabid?!

Gitmo.

I hope their 'Heaven" can help them when karma kicks in. What goes around does come around. Always.

I never truly knew hatred until 2001, just wasn't in my nature. It sure doesn't feel good at all. I will be so relieved when this surreal nightmare ends.

20. I feel the same way...
You know, I didn't think it could get any worse than the Raygun years, but I was wrong. It has gotten worse, much worse. It is at the point that anything the repubs are for, I'm against and anything they're against, I'm for. If they tell me its white, I will insist its black. If they say its raining, I will say the sun is shining, even if I'm dripping wet. That's how I feel about those dirty no good *$%#&*'s
