3. Of course, if you ask me who's the best choice for ANY leadership position in government
I'd say Wes Clark. :patriot:

President, Vice President, Secretary of State, Decider, Uniter, Chief of Whatever He Wants...

WES CLARK!!! :woohoo:

In seriousness, if Mark Warner passes the screen test, take him and go for Virginia.

7. Clark would be the best VP for everyone.
Everyone.

(Assuming Clark doesn't run and win the nomination...then I'd pick Obama as VP)

9. Dennis Kucinich would be the best choice for Hillary's VP,
because there is little question of his sincerity nor his liberal/union creds. He would humanize her campaign like nothing else and would make her more palatable to many who consider her totally unpalatable, now.

I think it would add at least ten percent to her general election win percentage and would shut up a lot of detractors, or, at least, give them something else to talk about.

Of course, if she is the political powerhouse her supporters think she is, she has already evaluated this possibility and has produced a likely decision.

13. If he can't draw more than 3%
of Democrats, how does he add 10% in the general?

NO VP candidate adds 10% - Kucinich would LOSE her votes.

19. I don't see that simply summing their stands in polls is a particularly
effective way of evaluating their performance as a team. The whole could well be greater than the sum of the parts, given that the presence of DK as a modifying, and perhaps mollifying, influence would serve to calm those a bit who are frightened by candidate Clinton.

Hillary Clinton scares me, as I see her as being too close to the forces that I am constitutionally committed to oppose. I am not arguing for the validity of that opinion, merely pointing to it.
As it happens, another poll on DU, a week or so ago, got me to thinking and trying to reason it through. What would it take to aim me away from being unalterably opposed to her and, considering that she would represent only one third of the fed, how could I go from that opposition to some form of, at least, unfriendly support.

I think Dennis would have a good influence on her, a counter-balance, as it were, and would serve to bring me to grudging acceptance. If it works on me, it could well work on others-perhaps many others.

26. If she's choosing a VP, she's already won the nomination
and then has to focus on winning the General.

Kucinich does nothing to help with that.

Yes, there are 2 or 3% of lefties who won't vote for her without Kucinich. But she would alienate 20 or 30% of the center by choosing him. It would be a political disaster.

Despite what people here fervently believe, Kucinich is not very popular. A simple look at his poll numbers verify that.

10. Only reason I don't like Clark is that would be too old by 2016
We'd have to get someone new to run. Obviously this is all hypothetical, but I'd rather have someone younger like Obama or Edwards in that VP slot who could then continue on as a Democratic President after their VP term is over.

25. he won't be eligible to be SecDef
for a few more years. There's a requirement that the Defense Secretary be 10 years out of the military - and its a good idea. It's a civilian position, not a military one.

He'd make a great Secretary of State, though.

I'd bet that if she wins, it will be one of those two.

There's a reason both candidates, considered likely presidential contenders in 2008, dropped out.

18. If Senator Clinton is the nominee I think she would likely consider
for her veep short list Evan Bayh of Indiana, Bill Richardson of New Mexico, Bill Nelson of Florida, or Russ Feingold of Wisconsin.

Bayh is safe, squeaky fresh, and would put Indiana in play.

Richardson gives the ticket geographic balance, adds appeal to Hispanic voters, and represents a state west of the Mississippi in a year when our convention is in Denver.

Bill Nelson would be the best strategic opportunity to win Florida's electoral votes.

Russ Feingold would mollify the left-leaning Democrats who might not ordinarily be attracted to Sen. Clinton as a first choice vote.

I believe Wes Clark would be on that short list and possibly Mark Warner (if he does not pursue the Senate seat in Virginia).

20. Bill Richardson - for his diplomatic skills
Hillary will need a VP that's independent enough and experienced enough to make the diplomatic trips to other nations to help smooth things over while she concentrates on domestic issues.

21. Senator Clinton, if she wins our nomination, might stun the free world and
choose Sheila Jackson Lee or Alexis Herman.

That would be an energetic choice or two right there.

Phil Bredeson is another option.

And the more I read about Brian Schweitzer, the more I want him in a very high position in the operations wings. I like this guy a lot.

Again, I'm not calling Senator Clinton to win our nomination. Her lead is formidable and her cash kitty bulges at the seams, yes. But it's far away from the first frost in Iowa, nevermind the first snowflakes, and still later comes the January caucuses.

If she wins the nomination in Denver a year from now, it would be a very magnanimous gesture for her to include many of her current rivals in key administrative posts. Perhaps Joe Biden at State. Perhaps Clark as veep. Perhaps John Edwards as Attorney General (sure would be a lift after Gonzales' tenure, wouldn it?). Perhaps Max Cleland for Veterans Affairs. Kucinich at HUD. A place for Obama and Dodd as well.

Lincoln appointed rivals and disparate sensibilities to his Cabinet. There's precedent for its success and might help politically stabilize a first HClinton term.

24. Here's a surprise suggestion for any of our candidates for 08 for the veep nom:
http://vanhollen.house.gov/HoR/MD08/Home

(Chris Van Hollen -- MD-08).

We're going to carry maryland anyway, yes, but I'm thinking that he would bring a much-needed Congressional liaison role to a Democratic administration, and there's 2016 to consider as well. He'd be a very good man to have down in the bullpen, seems to me.
