'Desperate Housewives' Actress Stumps for Obama

(Columbia) - Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama got some celebrity backing in the Midlands Saturday. Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Alfre Woodard spent her day in Columbia.

Alfre Woodard headlined the "Women for Obama" event this afternoon at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. She joined other females to commemorate the passage of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

Woodard is most recently recognized for her role as Betty Applewhite in "Desperate Housewives." She's won Emmys for her work on "The Practice" and "Miss Ever's Boys," and she received an Oscar nomination for her 1983 role in the movie "Cross Creek
