Sunday DU meta fun
Admit it.

Sometimes you post something on DU that you think is a little masterpiece -- or at least a good conversation starter.

When it drops like a rock, that jealous green head of yours says, "hey, why did that other lame post get so many Ks and Rs!?"

So, get it off your chest: write a parody or description of the kind of post that you can't understand the popularity of.

If this thread doesn't drop like a rock, you can use the responses to:

a) Emulate those posts and see if you, too, can rocket to the top of the greatest page
b) Avoid those aggravating (if popular) clichés

P.S., The obvious meta approach would be to dis this thread for its own lameness. Thank you in advance for the kick!

1. You can always write a swan song-I'm leaving DU OP
after you get home from the bars on a Saturday night then watch people beg you to stay. Watch it get 147 recs just because it's you. Make it sound very profound and then have your mother write another OP saying how you're so sincere.

Works for some people,

4. LOL! And here are a few more that come to mind...
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 10:47 AM by lwcon
"No matter what, I'm voting for a Democrat, goldurnit."
The ever-popular flame-bait: "(fill-in-the-blank candidate) is the only Dem I won't vote for."
"I personally witnessed something bad happen at a protest rally (e.g., oppressive behavior against the protesters)."
"My letter to..."

And the flip side of yours: "I'm new to DU, and I love this place."

Not that there's anything wrong with most of these, they just seem to generate a lot of conversation and Ks & Rs.

2. OK
But the clichés are part of the fun, if it's satire, no?

3. Also, this should be done with some caution, or you might
wind up with a "copy cat" thread.

5. I'm not so clever at parody, but just an observation --
I am constantly, completely mystified why one of my own posts will take off to the Greatest Page -- quickly -- and others sink with not one response or rec. (Many, I'm not surprised at, having posted them more or less "for the record.")

I know it has to do with things like time of day or night of posting, which forum you choose, how you word a subject line -- but, aside from those factors, there is a total mystery to it. (Although posts that give people a chance to vent their anger always seem to have a leg up over any posting of good news. Human nature, I guess.)

6. Yup, there is a degree of mystery
Sometimes the waves come in and carry a thread out to sea, and sometimes they leave it to rot and sink without a trace. Also some posts are better served on DU General Discussion, and others sink that much faster there.

7. GD is always a gamble. If you think something's really important...
and you want people to see it, you want the visibiity GD gives it. But it had better be attention-getting, or it's on page-two quick. And then very few see it.
