Politicians go where the crowds are, and this campaign season they're mixing it up online, and not just with the 20- and 30-somethings.
The 50-somethings also have joined the Web party, and the candidates are reaching out to tech-savvy boomers. Sixteen presidential candidates have added an eons.com calling card to their social-networking membership log-ons. In addition to Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, such presidential hopefuls as
Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and John McCain are blogging with baby boomers on a site eons.com creator Jeff Taylor wants to see become campaign headquarters for this generation.
You must be 50 or older to be an eons.com member.People participating in online politics tend to be opinion leaders and trendsetters, Darr says.
"This is a really golden group," she says. "They're giving money, they're technically savvy, they're networkers and they're using the latest technology available." Taylor didn't have to emphasize that selling point too strongly to the presidential candidates (even dropping his site's age requirement for the 46-year-old Obama).
Since its launch in July 2006, eons.com has attracted 850,000 members. An estimated 4,500 participated in an online political survey that coincided with the launch of the site's "Campaign Central" section last month. And about 20,000 to 25,000 people visit daily, Taylor says. That kind of crowd has earned the attention of 16 presidential candidates. Some - such as Clinton and Obama - blog on-site and have "friends" (140 for Clinton and 90 for Obama) as well as "robust profiles," according to Dean Tsouvalas, executive producer and director of content for the Web site.

"More than 5.5 million people have visited Eons in the past year, and the growth in that time to more than 560,000 profiles and nearly 2,500 Eons communities sends a message loud and clear that online social networking isn't just for kids. Boomers are loving life online, and Eons is the center of gravity for everything 50-plus."
